My Adventure at San Diego Comic Con

in Family Fun, La Jolla/San Diego

I went.  It was genuinely fun.  I am no expert in science fiction, comic books, or anything that was on offer so this is a review from a gal that is much more into shoes than polyhedral dice. Yes, that was a Dungeons and Dragons joke.

La Jolla Dad loves comic books. When we first bought our house and emptied our storage locker (we had put everything into storage that we didn’t need overseas) I was totally astonished by his collection.   It took up what seemed like almost an entire room, so he parted with half. Since then, he has been paring the collection down.  The highlight was recently selling ONE comic book for almost $700 on Ebay.  That, I couldn’t complain about, however, most were near worthless.  For a quick view of his dorkiness, see Man Cave or read his blog.

We went in 2001, before you had to buy tickets in advance.  We arrived early on Saturday afternoon, bought tickets and walked right in.  It was definitely packed, but I remember being able to walk around the main part ok.  The special presentations were in huge side conference rooms and there as no way we could get remotely close to those due to the crowds.  Something to think about if you’re attending this year and maybe pushing a stroller.  We hear that all days now are like that.

Anyway, I went with La Jolla Dad, his friend, and my sister in law.  It was great. The people watching was unbelievable.  Some people clearly put real time, money and effort into the costumes they were wearing. I remember a lot of Klingons. No, we weren’t dressed up. Ladies, don’t bother wearing your Manolos. No one is going to care.

My sister in law got an autograph from the Incredible Hulk,  Lou Ferrigno, which has made me laugh lately because he’s been all over the news these last few weeks as Michael Jackson’s personal trainer.  He seemed crabby that day.  My sister in law paid him a very genuine, glowing compliment and it was met by a sort of “yeah, whatever” response.  There was a short line to see him.  I can’t remember what else was on display that day but they were promoting some big movie that was about to come out.  I believe it was the first Spiderman.

La Jolla Dad tells me that the reason why it’s sold out so far in advance now is due to the further integration of more and more movies and video games.  Specifically, the Spiderman and Batman movies really escalated the interest in Comic Con. I was scrapbooking and watching E! last Sunday and laughed when I saw even Kim Kardashian went to Comic Con to promote a movie. When I was there, I think the Incredible Hulk was possibly the most famous person at Comic Con. However, there were plenty of comic book gurus there that were famous to La Jolla Dad.  We haven’t been able to attend since 2001 because we’ve been overseas and it’s been too hard with buying tickets in advance as we were never quite sure when we were going to be in town.  This year, we’ve been so busy that I think we just plain forgot.

Needless to say, this is a very large event for San Diego.  It’s next week from July 23-26 at the San Diego Convention Center.
