Off the Social Networking Deep End: Do You Poken?

On a whim, a few days ago, I purchased a Poken from @PokenGirl (that’s a Twitter ID, for those not in the know).  I didn’t really know what it was, but it’s cute and everyone in the blogosphere seems to be getting one.  Especially those going to Blogher, which is a huge conference for women bloggers going on right now in Chicago.  I kind of wish I was there, but got into this blogging thing way too late and it’s been sold out for some time.  Even La Jolla Dad encouraged me to go before I told him it was sold out.

My Poken arrived yesterday and it’s really cute.  I ordered the geisha, since I’m half Japanese but I sort of think the panda might have been more fitting because, well, I love pandas.  You can choose from an alien, ninja, tigress, dragon and more.  I don’t know how to use it properly yet since no one I know locally has a Poken, or maybe they do and I just don’t know about it yet.  @PokenGirl thoughtfully also included a lanyard just in case I was going to Blogher, and needed to wear it around my neck.  I’d probably have to, since all the people in my Twitter network going to Blogher seem to be sporting Pokens these days.

If I were to come into contact with someone that also had a Poken, I’d hold mine next to theirs and then our social networking data (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn,etc) would automatically be exchanged.  The Poken has a USB plug that I insert into my computer and, voila, their data would automatically be uploaded.  Easy peasy.  It’s the new business card.

So I went out to get the mail yesterday and my husband saw me bring in the small envelope the Poken arrived in.  He asked “What is that?” and I replied “You won’t understand…” because he doesn’t really know what Twitter is, for example.  But I told him about the Poken anyway.  He rolled his eyes and started laughing.  Then we had a Poken emergency as neither of us saw La Jolla Girl swipe it off the table and shove it in a drawer in her room.  La Jolla Dad rescued the Poken.  During this time, ordering the panda Poken did cross my mind if indeed the geisha was totally lost.  icon smile Off the Social Networking Deep End: Do You Poken?

I suppose I’m going to have to go to some San Diego Tweetups (that’s Twitter-Meetup, for the non Twitterati) just to use my Poken!

Do you Poken?  Do you like it?

I had no idea what a Poken was until just now, I was googling it to figure out what my friend was talking about. LOL. BUT of course I’m being totally sucked in by the cuteness factor of the Poken. Thanks for explaining it.
