Wine Wednesday – 7 Deadly Zins 2007

by La Jolla Mom on July 22, 2009

in Red Wine under $15, Wine, Zinfandel

The name is cool, isn’t it.  The people that buy because of the name will not be disappointed.  It’s a good, reliable wine and is $10.99 at Costco.  My dad likes it too.  I believe it used to be $12.99.

I don’t know much about Lodi so here’s a quick run down if you’re in the same boat.  It’s located about 30 miles south of Sacramento and is about 90 miles east of San Francisco. It’s got a sort of Mediterranean climate, with warm days and cool afternoon and evening breezes.  This, along with sandy soils, allows wine makers to cultivate the older Zinfandel vines, and make great wines.  Wikipedia dubs Lodi as the “Zinfandel Capital of the World” and mentions that Robert Mondavi grew up there. There are about 70 wineries in Lodi, large and small.  Lodi did extremely well in the 1970s and 1980s when White Zinfandel was a craze, which I thought was interesting and made perfect sense.  Sounds like a place worth a visit!

Winemakers notes:

“Lustful Flavors: Notes of sweet plums and pepper dominate the nose, while flavors of blueberry, raspberry, cinnamon, and black pepper pack the palate from start to finish. The silky-smooth tannins hold the wine together and deliver a soft, fruit driven experience.”

I read someone on Snooth describe this wine as “spicy but not pricey” which is true.  It’s something you want to drink with a steak, chocolate or hearty Italian meals. The winemakers recommend even BBQ Salmon.  Up to you.

The Michael David Family of Wines website is here.

Also, don’t forget to enjoy this catchy poem on the back label:

Schulenburg’s vines, grubby with GREED,
Embrace Lodi’s soil, to drink and to feed.
Oh Lord, forgive me my zin.
Secure in it’s strength, weathered with PRIDE,
Standing like soldiers, the forest of Snyde.
Oh Lord, forgive me my zin.
Hearts filled with LUST, ole Maley’s trees.
Court Lodi’s sun, and flirt with it’s breeze.
Oh Lord, forgive me my zin.
Good Bishofberger did raise some GLUTTONOUS beast,
Vines fattened like turkeys before Thanksgiving feast.
Oh Lord, forgive me my zin.
With the tilt of the glass, I commit seven zins,
Oh Lord, with your help… I’ll do it again.
Indulge!

I bought this wine after having it at a friend’s, but I keep buying it because it’s good, inexpensive, and has such a cool name! Sometimes Costco even runs coupons for it, making it an exceptional deal.
Have you ever heard of Consilience wines? They make good reds too, discovered them on a trip to Los Olivos.

Try the Ravenswood Old Vines Zin from Lodi. Much better in my opinion: http://www.vinegeek.com/2009/09/lodi-old-vines-zin-part-2-ravenswood/
.-= Jim Wilkerson´s last blog ..This is why Côtes du Rhône rocks! =-.

Had this wine fot the first time 2 yrs ago…I really like it but my husband loves it! The first bottle we bought had the poem on the back label and we have never been able to find another bottle that did! We live in northern Alberta and this wine is $27!! Can’t even get it inexpensively at Costco in Edmonton!
