Wine Wednesday – Parducci Sustainable Red 2005

by La Jolla Mom on August 12, 2009

in Organic/Green Wines, Red Blend, Red Wine under $15, Wine

This wine was an impulse buy at Bevmo. It had it’s own corner display and a tag about how it’s sustainably farmed. Great! I’ll take it. Wilfred Wong gave it a rating of 88. It’s on sale now for $8.99 at Bevmo but I think I paid a little bit more than that.

Parducci is a part of Mendocino Wine Company and I recognize some of their other wine labels like Zig Zag Zin. Parducci claims they are the first winery in the US to be carbon neutral. They get their grapes from family farms and they also have a huge emphasis on environmentally friendly packaging. They use bio diesel in their tractors and cars and are getting 25% of their energy from solar power.

The wine is a mix of sustainably grown Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Primitivo, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Viognier grapes.  This is not a wine that is very good straight out of the bottle but it was much improved after running it through our Vinturi Wine Aerator Wine Wednesday Parducci Sustainable Red 2005.  The second bottle tasted exactly the same. It does taste sort of like a generic table wine, sad to say.

Winemakers notes:

“Parducci Sustainable Red has berry fruit flavors and spicy complexities. Enjoy this robust dry red wine with pasta, pizza, grilled, and flavorful cheeses.”

Parducci’s website is here.  I wish that more wineries were as “green” as they are.
