Wine Wednsday – Naiara Reserva Malbec 2006

by La Jolla Mom on August 5, 2009

in Malbec, Red Wine under $15, Wine

The theme of this Wine Wednesday is unintentionally Argentina.

This wine was recommended to me by a commentor on my Norton Reserva Malbec post. At my next Costco shopping trip, I saw it and bought a lot. The price tag there is $8.99 so given the glowing recommendation of my commenter (who I believe distributes the wine) and Costco, we bought a lot. The 2005 vintage got a 90 rating from Wine Advocate and from what I’ve read, most people seem to think that the 2006 is better.  It’s an unbelievable value.

Snooth recommends that you serve this with lamb or fried onion rings, at least when I looked. The latter made me laugh out loud but considering we served it with Domino’s pizza, serves me right. You most certainly can serve it with more gourmet food and we plan to.

Naiara is a family owned winery in Maipu, Mendoza that was built in the 19th century. It was once a I could not locate the winery’s tasting notes for the 2006 vintage but their website is here.

I have a hard time deciding if I like it better than the Norton, but considering Naiara is less expensive, I’ll go with that for casual drinking at home. Even one of my wine snobby friends mentioned he really liked the wine and asked what it was, without being prompted.
