Oprah Is Right About The Bra Whisperer: Correctly Sized Bras Might Change Your Life

Do you remember the Bra Whisperer episode of Oprah? On that show, I learned that approximately 85% of women are wearing the wrong bra size. I thought, “ok, well maybe that’s true” but didn’t think too much of it. I also remember Oprah going gang busters over her newly corrected bra size. But she’s in the TV business and hype like that’s good for her show, right?

A few days ago, I had the pleasure of having my bra sized by Susan Nethero, otherwise known as The Bra Whisperer, at the new Intamacy Boutique in Fashion Valley. Susan and I were introduced, she grabbed me a full glass of champagne (which I was grateful for) and in to the dressing room we went.

Susan took a look at my bra, tugged on it a little and explained exactly how a bra should fit. The one I had on was ill fitting and I knew it. None of my “good” bras were clean (!!!) and I didn’t have time to fix that before I left for Intimacy. Here is a handful of things I learned during this consultation:

1. You’re not supposed to wear your bra 2 days in a row. I assumed she was going to say it was for hygiene reasons. However, if your bra is allowed a day of beauty rest, it will last longer. I’m totally guilty of bra insomnia. This means you should have at least 3 good bras. One in action, one resting and one in the wash.
2. Your straps are only supposed to carry 10% of the workload. Many of us make the mistake of tightening the straps too much on our ill fitting bras.
3. Lace bands usually last longer.
4. Never size your bra by using a tape measure. If someone measures you a 1/2 inch or inch too high, it can radically change your size. A good bra specialist can eyeball your size based on how your current bra fits.

After my tutorial, Susan left the room and came back with 2 arms full of gorgeous bras in the right (not very exciting) size.

That has never, ever happened to me. I wasn’t watching the time, but we were in there for a long while trying on bra after perfect bra. The one thing I noticed is that they all fastened lower on the back than I was used to. Apparently, that has something to do with back fat, which fortunately isn’t an issue for me (yet).

I’d say there were about 30 other social media ladies in attendance, most I now consider friends. I don’t think anyone’s bra size was what they thought it was. Most people walked out with bras the didn’t just “like” but rather “LOVED” – and I mean really loved. We joked the next day about who slept in their bra.

I did receive a gift certificate at the event to spend in the store. I will say that even with that, I did some hefty damage to my credit card. The least expensive bra I tried on was about $80 with most them averaging around $100-$120, give or take. I tried one that was $164 and it probably is worth every penny. I chose a convertible black bra with fancy straps, a basic nude style with just enough detail to make it special and matching underwear. These are not flimsy bras and yes, I do have basic taste. You are getting what you pay for and you’ll feel like a new person.

Guess what? Anyone can schedule a complimentary bra fitting online at any Intimacy Boutique.  This is not a service only available to media, superstars, and people with big bank accounts, but is something that any woman can do.  If you don’t happen to live near an Intimacy Boutique, Susan has a book available called Bra Talk that’s available on Amazon and the Intimacy Boutique website, which itself is chock full of information. We received a complimentary copy. It’s full of information and I did read it, but you really should have the experience of being fitted. Intimacy’s experts are going to know exactly what styles and colors suit you too. Just be prepared to walk out with at least 1 or more bras, because you’ll realize in that dressing room that the right bra can change your life.  The correct bra size could definitely also make you look thinner, if you’re normally a larger size. You’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner.
