I‘m not writing about these Rice Krispie Treats, because I think they are extraordinary.  They were just a lightbulb moment at a time I was not able to get to the store and wanted to do something other than make the treats into a bar.  It’s a quick and easy dessert that your kids can help make.  You know how to make Rice Krispie Treats, right?

Ingredients:
3 tbsp Butter
1 package (10 oz) of marshmallows
6 cups of Rice Krispies

Directions (abridged):
Melt the butter over low heat in a saucepan. Stir in marshmallows until melted.
Add the Rice Krispies until well coated.
Press into a 9x13x2 inch pan. I used a quarter sheet pan so that they were thinner and easier to cut with a cookie cutter.

Then grab two round cookie cutters (one larger than the other) or use a knife to cut circles. It helps to put a little cooking spray on the cookie cutter and if the Rice Krispies are still warm.

Grab an angled spatula or knife and cut the smaller circle in half. Take the circle halves and press them on to the larger circle to make a bear face. Believe it or not, they will stick really easily. Not rocket science, I realize, but this “ah ha” moment opened up more options. I grabbed a star cookie cutter to make easy cat ears and used scraps to form dog ears.

Then, I decided to melt some chocolate and pipe some mini details on to the Rice Krispie Treats. Put chocolate chips or candy melts in a Ziploc bag. Warm them in the microwave until melted, cut off the end of the Ziploc bag, and pipe details.

Leftover frosting is always in my freezer, so I dabbed some on for eyes and then added a mini chocolate chip for the dog eyes. Here’s the cat too.

La Jolla Girl thought this wasn’t enough detail, so I warmed some frosting to make a panda and melted some other candy melts to attempt a monkey and a more colorful cat. She insisted on helping with this, so here they are. If you’re short on time, don’t do this.

You probably can create better looking Rice Krispie Treat animals. But if you are in a hurry, and don’t have a 3 year old demanding creative control, you can put the non frosted version together in minutes. I always keep Rice Krispies and marshmallows on hand for emergencies.
