The oldest hotel in La Jolla turned 100 on Friday and will be celebrating in style throughout 2013. The Grande Colonial Hotel has been delighting guests and residents since grand opening day, February 1, 1913.
The Grande Colonial holds a very special place in La Jolla’s history and a fond place in the hearts of many in the community. We join a very exclusive group of other hotels in San Diego that have celebrated such a milestone, including the Horton Grand, Hotel Del and US Grant.”
–Terrence Underwood, general manager of the hotel since 1999, who has directed much of the hotel’s restoration over the past decade.
Festivities to celebrate the Centennial will dot the 2013 calendar, helping one of San Diego’s most established and luxurious hotels share the stories of the movers and shakers who have passed through its doors—athletes, movie stars, business leaders—in the 100 years since the hotel was founded. If only the walls could talk. We’ve stayed at the Grande Colonial Hotel, too. It’s family-friendly with room service provided by NINE-TEN, one of my favorite restaurants in all of San Diego. You can easily walk to shops, restaurants and even the beach.
The hotel will offer specials and packages for overnight guests, monthly receptions for the community, throw-back cocktail menus and promotions at NINE-TEN Restaurant, and a variety of contests that will be promoted and accessible via social media channels, to name just a few. A historic booklet and video will also be unveiled and available for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike.
The hotel is also interested in hearing from the community, sharing stories and photographs about the hotel and what it has meant to them. Those who contribute a memory between January and December 2013 will be eligible for a monthly drawing to win a vacation package combined with dinner at NINE-TEN. Along with stories, people are also encouraged to submit historical mementos from the hotel.
The Grande Colonial Hotel has been renovated and restored over the years with the most recent improvement to the lobby.
