These recycled aluminum tiles are one of my favorite additions to our master eco-friendly bathroom remodel.  When I ordered them, I was prepared for failure since there isn’t much information out there about tiles like these in a bathroom floor application. Luckily, it worked out fine. We chose 100% recycled aluminum tiles from Eco-Friendly Flooring, Inc.  The finish is vibrated aluminum. Regular price is $37 per square foot plus tax and shipping. This price also includes [...]

When it came time to choose paint for our eco-friendly bathroom remodel, I wanted a zero VOC option. First, I needed to do some research to find out if zero VOC paints have performance issues. VOCs are solvents that get released into the air as the paint dries. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, some VOCs are suspected carcinogens. I asked David Chism of La Jolla’s Chism Brother’s Painting a few questions about eco-friendly [...]

The Non Eco-Friendly Side of Remodeling

The waste involved in remodeling really bothers me. Our house has this really awesome 1960s plaster that resembles concrete. I can’t hear my cell phone if it’s in the other room, because the walls don’t let much sound through. Before buying this house, I looked a lot of newer homes with walls that seemed hollow and had terrible acoustics. I took the video below before it occurred to me that there really wasn’t a reason [...]

Eco-Friendly Bathroom Remodel: Moen Envi Eco-Performance Showerhead

August 10, 2010

I ordered the Moen Envi eco-performance showerhead and tested it out in my daughter’s bathroom prior to ordering one for ours. It’s the closest thing to an eco-friendly rain showerhead I could find. I could not find any information regarding how consumers like this eco-friendly product, so I decided to film a short video. A lot of people complain about the pressure of eco-friendly showerheads.  No need to worry about this with this showerhead. Moen’s [...]

As a wine lover, I tried to make CorkDotz™ work for our eco-friendly bathroom remodel, but it just didn’t fit in with the rest of what we’re doing. Our design is a little too linear. This is a photo of the CorkDotz™ sample I ordered. CorkDotz™ cork mosaics are recycled from the cork stopper industry’s by-product (leftover cork cuts) and sold online at ModWalls, which is a store I recently raved about. The cork rounds are [...]

The most difficult part of our eco-friendly bathroom remodel is being limited to recycled tiles. It’s a totally self-inflicted requirement, and I have almost thrown in the towel after seeing gorgeous alternatives. Trying to fit several styles of eco-friendly tiles into our design has been frustrating. Cost is an issue as well. People make the mistake of assuming that eco-friendly or recycled tiles are less expensive than others. This isn’t true in most cases, unfortunately, [...]
