I love a great wine at a bargain price (who doesn’t). Recently, I was at a holiday party sponsored by Fresh and Easy. Out of all the red wines they sell, they selected Doon Buggy Red Blend 2009 to serve. Apparently, it’s very popular among the employees too. So, the gist of the story is that Fresh and Easy bought Doon Buggy Red Blend from winery in Napa Valley that needed to unload it. This [...]

This is one of our top picks from the current BevMo 5 cent sale.  It’s Gen5 Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 and though I feel that Wilfred Wong pads his ratings a little bit, he is right about this wine.  He gave it a 92 rating and said, “Way past the pretty face stage, the sophisticated and finely tuned ’08 Gen 5 Cabernet is one of the best reds I have ever tasted out of Lodi; bountiful [...]

Nothing is better than a good wine at a great price. Initially, I received Layer Cake wine media samples in the mail, including this bottle. I opened it for family on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. I’ve had it before so knew people would enjoy it, and they did. On Wednesday, I drove over to San Diego Wine Company to grab some wine for Thanksgiving Day. They have this Layer Cake Malbec for $12.95. I put [...]

We drink a lot of wine and order a lot of pizza, so it’s not surprising that we paired The Climber 2009 Red Blend with a yard sale pizza from Extreme Pizza. It was delicious. Therefore, I laughed when the wine’s pairing notes say that it’s a pizza wine at heart. Winemaker Notes: “Our Climber Red brings together our favorite varietals to create a versatile, food-friendly wine that unveils new aromas and flavors with each [...]

Fetish The Watcher Shiraz 2008 (Yes, It’s Wine)

This was a label purchase at San Diego Wine Company. I do not recall being sold by a write up or anything else. My love of Barossa Valley Shiraz plus the name Fetish equaled purchase.  This wine is big, bold and basically has a lot going on.  I suspect because it’s aged in 15% shaven French oak, 30% shaven American oak, and the rest in third-fill American wood for 10 months. Wow. Winemaker’s Notes: “The [...]

Edie Brown Meritage: San Diego Wine Co. Party Pick

You’re going to think I’m insane, but we hosted a fairly large surprise party in the middle of our eco-friendly bathroom remodel.  It’s a long story, but we thought we’d be much further along in the process, and that it would be doable.  It was a nice party, but not in the style that I typically prefer. Per usual, I rushed into San Diego Wine Company.  I said that I needed a party red wine [...]
