Last week, wine picks from the Encinitas BevMo! were featured. This week, John Bogdan of the La Jolla BevMo! store is here with his wine picks.

How long have you been a wine specialist?

8 years

How long have you been at BevMo!

8 years

Favorite part of your job at BevMo!

Experiencing new wines & sharing them with our customers.

5 cent sale Red Wine Pick

Vigilance Red Blend (Cimarron ’09, sale price is $10.02 per bottle). Great everyday style wine that can go with almost any food. A Zin based wine with Cab, Merlot and Petite Sirah. Very smooth, excellent fruit, medium body and nice finish. Think BBQ with this one.

5 cent sale White Wine Pick

Main and Geary Pinot Grigio (sale price is $6.52 per bottle!). Excellent white for light Fish or Chicken dishes. Crisp and clean, well balanced and consistent throughout.

Tell us about what wines you love?

I like the hidden secrets and jewels found in our end of vintage line. You can find excellent older vintages that are hard to find and with a savings of 20-40% off. I like almost all RED wines from most countries.

So, readers, is there a wine you’ve purchased at BevMo lately that you like? I bought both of the above wines and pick them up tomorrow. Will let you know how they taste.

Now that we are no longer expats, one way that I keep those travel memories alive is by collecting vintage luggage labels. They are easily framed and displayed throughout our house. My husband and I happen to like the vibrant colors and retro-look that some of them have. Here’s a little bit about them, what we look out for and where we buy them.

Short History Of Luggage Labels

Luggage labels are from what is considered the golden age of travel, roughly the 1900s – 1950s. Labels existed prior to that, but they didn’t have the same look or use. They are actually stickers used to advertise the hotels. Hotel bellhops and other airline luggage handlers would apply these stickers to passenger trunks and suitcases. Today, they are highly collectible, especially those designed by certain artists.

What We Look For

Though I really could go overboard with all of the designs, we typically buy:

Airlines we’ve flown.

Hotels we’ve stayed in.

Hotels we’ve been to.

Luckily, a lot of hotels we’ve stayed at are rich with history and have been around long enough to have a vintage luggage labels. The Raffles Hotel in Singapore (link opens to the recipe for their famous Singapore Sling) has numerous vintage luggage labels, for example. I kept my eye open for exactly the one I wanted and snapped it up the second I saw it for sale.

Where To Buy Them

There are many copies floating around the internet. If you are looking for the real thing, I would suggest you contact a dealer. I did buy two labels on Ebay from dealers with a lot of positive feedback. My favorite dealer is called Picture This, but in Hong Kong. They do ship overseas if you see something in their catalog that you like. Their labels are in perfect condition and they have enough expertise to authenticate them. The 1930s Peninsula Hotel label in the photo above is from there. I paid about $205 for it, but have paid less for others.

Displaying Luggage Labels

They look better in real life, seriously.

I have them in simple Pottery Barn frames, however, I just found out that their plexiglass still lets in some UV rays so I need to swap them out for higher quality frames. The simple black frames do allow the vibrant colors to pop.

It’s not a fancy idea, but looking at these labels make me happy and reminds me of our travels. You may want to consider this idea if you love to travel and enjoy filling your walls with memories. Buying authentic vintage travel posters is another topic that I’ll tackle shortly.

I sometimes have a picky eater on my hands. In order to expand her willingness to allow healthier food into her lunch box, I’ve started making quick kids bento lunches, which also puts my random Japanese dollar store finds above to good use. They take a little bit more effort than the standard PB&J, but I keep it to under 15 minutes, usually less. Buying the right kids bento lunch box helps immensely so here are the ones we either own or considered buying. Most are eco-friendly.

Laptop Lunches

There are many different options when it comes to Laptop Lunches. This set is a little bit more expensive than other options at around $40, however, it’s been worth every penny. It is very easy to use the containers on the inside or leave them out to make room for a big sandwich. La Jolla Girl is almost 5 years old and doesn’t have trouble opening the containers. We did practice opening the main container that fits inside the padded bag and houses the smaller ones. The Laptop Lunches website has more color and pattern choices than Amazon does.

If you choose Laptop Lunches, you will need to make absolutely sure that you pack a leak proof drink container. La Jolla Girl’s cubby isn’t tall enough for her lunch box to stand up straight, so it often lays horizontally. So far, we’ve had great luck with a 12oz Klean Kanteen. It fits into a netted pocket on the side of her Laptop Lunchbox. Klean Kanteen comes in multiple colors and is also easy to clean, though sometimes she has trouble taking off the protective cap. Retail price varies between $14.95 – $18.95.

Easy Lunchboxes

EasyLunchboxes is BPA free and gets good reviews. It’s not completely leak-proof, so liquids like berry juice can escape. It’s a more economical option and since kids don’t eat too much, it’s enough space for a lunch. You can even put it in a cute re-usable bag. It’s hard to beat a set of 4 for $13.95.

Kotobuki Panda

I bought the Kotobuki Panda Tiered Bento Box as a total impulse buy. I love pandas and it was almost 50% off on Amazon. I didn’t read the dimensions. It’s a very good 2-layer bento box that’s perfect for a snack at the park, but not big enough to serve as a lunch box for most kids. It’s not durable enough to be thrown around pre-school style either. We do still use it. It comes in an adorable frog too which is $22. The panda is on sale for $12.49.

ECO Lunch Box

I don’t own the Eco Lunch Box three-in-one set but I love the idea of stainless steel only. It has 3 containers that nest together to prevent food from touching. It’s dishwasher safe, BPA, PVC, lead and vinyl free. This set retails for $16.49.

Use What You Have

If you don’t feel like buying a lunch box that has pre-made dividers, not to worry. You can create your own dividers using lettuce, by cleverly arranging food or inserting muffin cups. We’ll get into these techniques later.

I Have A Lunch Box – Now What?

Sometimes it just takes seeing a photo of something to jog your memory and get the creative juices flowing. The lunches I make aren’t spectacular. They are made in under 15 minutes and cool enough that my preschooler eats more than just the crackers. So, hopefully you’ll walk away with a few ideas. I’d also love to hear what kind of lunches you are packing too.

And, I’ll walk you through most of the stuff in the cool gadgets above. I bought most in Hong Kong and Tokyo, but shockingly some of it is available on Amazon or at Marukai Value off the 163 freeway. Some are worth seeking out!

We are big fans of the BevMo! 5 cent sale. In case you’re unfamiliar with the sale, you can buy one bottle of wine and get the second for five cents! The first 5 cent wine sale of 2012 is going on right now, featuring over 100 wines with a rating of 90 points or above and 15 different varietals from 11 different countries. If you’re anything like me, you probably want to narrow the choices down. To help, Christopher Nelson, wine expert at the Encinitas Bevmo! store, tells us about his favorites.

Favorite Part Of Your Job At BevMo!

Working with customers and helping them expand their minds and their palates

Favorite Red In The 5 Cent Wine Sale

Artesa Meritage has a soft cherry and rhubarb notes that are well balanced with sweet earth undertones that carry this 14.5% abv very well. It is wonderfully red blend for $19.99.

Favorite White In The 5 Cent Sale

Pacific Rim Organic Riesling is on the sweeter side of the varietal but not over the top. It has a nice flowery bouquet that leads the way to a pleasantly sweet light wine with notes of tart apple, sweet pear, honeysuckle. $15.99

Tell Us About Your Favorite Wines

I gravitate towards wines that are smooth and easy to drink, but also have complex flavors that keep me saying, “I know this flavor now what is it?”

The BevMo 5 cent sale is on until March 18, 2012. However, don’t delay because sometimes favorites run out toward the end of the sale. We know from personal experience. Answers from the La Jolla wine expert are to come!

Heart-shaped Fruit

DIY Valentine’s Day Cards

Cut out a bunch of same-sized hearts and punch a lolipop through. This is neat because if you leave the card on kids will like that the flower takes place of their mouths. I also saw a version of this using big lips and a mustache. It’s a very cute kids craft!

I arrived at Prospect Bar and Grill expecting to take photos of the view. It’s located on Prospect Street in La Jolla, upstairs in a building that happens to have an amazing ocean view. Until then, I had only been at night without the luxury of enjoying everything this bar and grill has to offer. Read on, cocktail lovers.

Green Apple Mojito

I did call in advance to ask about popular food and cocktail items. The green apple mojito intrigued me so figured I’d have the bartender make it and I’d snap a few photos. This isn’t something I would normally order, but I can now vouch for it’s popularity. It doesn’t taste like it has alcohol in it, but reminds me of a like spa-like spritzer. The mix is green apple rum poured over ice and muddled mint leaves, limes and simple syrup. You’d have to be careful not to drink too many of these as it would be easy to overdo it.

As it’s being made, I grab the menu to remind myself what exactly is in the drink. And, then something about the Bloody Mary catches my eye.

Do they put Slim Jims in their Bloody Mary’s or what is that meat stick. Well, here it is up close. From left to right we have pepper jack cheese, jalapeno, salami, green olives, lemon slice, cucumber, jalapenos, and more pepper jack cheese. It’s huge. And, it’s perfect.

Not to mention that the Bloody Mary is spicy (but not overly so, I can’t do too spicy), delicious and schooner-sized making it an incredible value at $10. Speaking of value, grab one of these Deal Me In Today vouchers and head over to Prospect Bar and Grill to try a Bloody Mary or Green Apple Mojito. Get yourself a burger while you’re at it, because I hear they are popular.

And, did I mention the view? Picture yourself dining al fresco, sipping one of these cocktails, having a casual bite to eat and enjoying the ocean view.

There are also a ton of TVs and pool tables, making Prospect Bar and Grill a great venue for when games you want to see are on TV. They have Happy Hour too.

But really, go get yourself a Bloody Mary or a Green Apple Mojito stat.

We associate hearts with February mostly because of Valentine’s Day. However, it is also American Heart Month, a partnership between the CDC, American Heart Association and others who are focused on raising awareness of cardiovascular disease and stroke, the number one killer of women. We can change our diets and make other lifestyle improvements, but one simple way to help our heart become physically and emotionally healthy is to add yoga into our routine. Anyone can do yoga and I would encourage you to try it, regardless of your fitness level. I did a little research of my own and had the opportunity to ask Alexandra Oehmigen-Gessner, MA, R-YT, Director at Prana Yoga here in La Jolla a few questions regarding yoga and heart health.

The Cardiovascular Benefits Of Yoga

We all understand that yoga is a good thing to do, but for those who need statistics, there have been studies lately showing that people with cardiovascular disease show signs of improvement after as little as 6 weeks of yoga, 3 times per week. Some of the participants in this yoga study by the Yale School of Medicine already had cardiovascular disease and their blood vessel function improved by a whopping 70% percent (the average was 17%, including those without cardiovascular disease). There are many reasons for this:

Stress is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease. Yoga and meditation help relieve stress.

Yoga is exercise. All exercise improves blood vessel function.

Yoga is a different form of exercise. I don’t know about you, but I physically feel better after I do yoga in a way that I don’t after a rigorous cardio session. My posture is better and I am less prone to injury, enabling me to exercise more. Not to mention I am always in a better mood after a yoga class.

The Spiritual Side Of Yoga

Alexandra explains this best and as someone who enjoys yoga, I completely agree with her. The connection between mind, body and heart is undeniable.

We all know how it feels to go through life with a closed heart – or walls around us – versus opening our heart and approaching people with kindness and compassion. What Yoga aims to do is pull us away from fears, worries, resentments, etc., the constant chatter of our minds, into the present moment. When we can experience that our body, mind and heart is in union (which is Yoga’s ultimate goal).

As moms we might experience this e.g. when we are fully immersed in playing with our children, even if only for a few minutes, but you are in the moment and just enjoying it. The focus on breathing in Yoga helps calm down the nervous system and helps us focus on the present moment.

I think that’s why Yoga is so appealing to many people – because it reminds us and brings our attention back to the things that matter – while we get a workout and take care of our body.

- Alexandra Oehmigen-Gessner, MA, R-YT, Director at Prana Yoga

Heart-healthy Yoga Poses

There are so many heart-healthy yoga poses, but Alexandra singled these out as particularly so. They are present in most yoga classes or you can do them at home on your own time.

Mountain Pose (Tadasana): Feet can be together or hip distance apart. Feel your feet equally balanced so that you’re not pushing too much weight toward your toes or heels. Pull up your knee caps (knees are not locked), tuck your hips a bit and raise your hands above your head. Lift the crown of your head toward the sky and breathe.

Warrior Pose: From Mountain Pose (above), jump to horizontally extended arms and legs. Rotate your feet, lean to one side and bend that knee. Warrior is illustrated perfectly in the photo below.

Tree pose: Start in Mountain Pose and lift one foot so that the sole meets the opposite inner thigh. Balance and lengthen your arms over your head.

Bottom Line – You Can Choose Yoga Because:

Science backs up what most yogi already know.

It connects your mind, body and soul together.

Yoga just makes you feel good.

Prana has been around for 10 years. It was founded by Gerhard Gessner (Alexandra’s husband), a La Jolla resident of 33 years who has been teaching Yoga in La Jolla for nearly 30 years.

Prana is very community-oriented – we know our student’s names – and the student body reflects the eclectic mix of all kinds of interesting people who chose LJ as their home. From Scripps scientists, to doctors, local small business owners, busy moms, students, surfers, artists, etc.

- Alexandra Oehmigen-Gessner, MA, R-YT, Director Prana Yoga

There are more than 40 classes on offer per week taught by experienced instructors who often bring additional expertise their yoga classes. One teacher combines yoga and physical therapy, another was a member of the London-based Yoga performance company, known as the ‘Cirque de Soleil’ of yoga. The latest addition is a busy, local mom of 2. Once her kids were old enough she pursued her dream and got certified through Prana as a yoga teacher.

While our instructors are experts and take teaching the art of Yoga seriously, there is always a light energy – people ultimately want to have fun, feel good and be happy. Our intention is to provide that to students from all walks of life and give them the space to exhale, tune in to themselves and enjoy some special ‘me time.’

- Alexandra Oehmigen-Gessner, MA, R-YT, Director at Prana Yoga

Give yourself the care you deserve by doing yoga. If you need a comfortable place to practice that feels like home, there isn’t a better time to try Prana Yoga with this deal, thanks to Deal Me In Today.

After the holidays, La Jolla Dad and I were tired from entertaining and being entertained. We decided to try the Whole Living Action Plan for 3 days (because it involves eating food), in lieu of a juice cleanse. I was curious to see if healthy, good food eaten properly could compare to the quick and dirty results of a juice cleanse. Week 1 of the Whole Living Action plan has similar ingredients to the juices I am used to drinking during a cleanse: fruits, vegetables and nuts. So, we gave it a go.

Why just 3 days? It’s honestly the most I can tolerate, mentally and schedule wise. I am not a good dieter. The recipes we used can be found via Whole Living magazine or my Pinterest board.

What Is The Whole Living Action Plan?

The Whole Living Action Plan is a 28 day mind and body detox designed to put you back in touch with your hunger. The six things you need to omit entirely are processed food or beverages, added sugar, dairy, gluten, caffeine (not even green tea is allowed – I asked), and alcohol. The first week recipes include plant based fats (nuts, seeds and oils), vegetables and fruits. During the second week, you may add back in seafood, beans and lentils and organic soy. Week three allows gluten-free grains and eggs while week four, you are back to healthy routine. Whole Living assigns 50 recipes to help participants get the job done without feeling deprived.

Some Simple Changes I Made

I do not have a juicer, so opted for smoothies in the morning. I also, usually, work out quite a bit so I probably ate more food than other people participating in the Action Plan. Because my husband was also participating, I used a little variety. For instance, on the first day, we ate the cauliflower snack and butternut squash soup together for dinner instead of just the soup. I also doubled or tripled the soup recipes so we’d have enough for lunch the next day. Cooking each meal is pretty time consuming, so it’s nice to have extra on hand if you’re running low on time. In fact, next time, I’ll likely make both soups in advance and freeze. I also did not feel like I had enough energy to run or attend boot camp, but gentle yoga would have been ok.

My 4-year-old liked the soups, cauliflower, trail mix, poached apples and not much else. I made her separate meals, which wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. Again, the recipes are here but here is the order in which we used them.

Day 1 Recipes

Breakfast: Green Smoothie
Snack: Cranberry-Pumpkin Seed Trail Mix
Lunch: Kale Slaw with Red Cabbage and Carrorts

Snack: Kale Chips
Dinner: Butternut Squash Soup and Roasted Cauliflower

On this day, I was tired and fell asleep at 8:30pm, which is totally unheard of.

Day 2 Recipes

Breakfast: Carrot Mango Smoothie

Tip: I poured my husband and I a full glass of smoothie. I added yogurt and a bit of maple syrup to the remainder and served it to La Jolla Girl. She thought it was great.

Snack: Cranberry-Pumpkin Seed Trail Mix. I found this snack to almost completely kill any hunger pangs.
Lunch: Leftover Butternut Squash Soup with a little bit of Kale Coleslaw on the side.
Snack: Minty Pea Dip.
Dinner: Roasted Garlic and Beet Soup and Avocado with Bell Pepper and Tomatoes. I used our homegrown lemon thyme in the soup. My husband declared it restaurant quality and asked me to add it into our normal routine. I loved the avocado though!

Tip: Be careful not to put too much soup in the blender, otherwise the steam will blow the top off. Yep, this happened to me. Beets flew everywhere. Try half full at the most.

Day 3

Breakfast: Carrot Mango Smoothie, since it was such a hit the first time.
Snack: A very small fruit plate, as I had a breakfast meeting and needed to order something off a menu.
Lunch: Beet Soup and Avocado with Bell Pepper and Tomato.
Snack: Poached Apples with Cinnamon and Walnuts. This one was a huge hit with my daughter.

This was so good that I ate it again the next day. I have never, ever thought to put squash in a salad.

End Result

I felt exactly as I did after a 3-day juice cleanse. I do not make a habit of weighing myself, but I would guess that I lost about 3 lbs. My pants fit better and I could tell an inch or so was gone in my waist. My husband lost a few pounds and said that he never felt deprived. I wasn’t hungry either. I saw a cake in the window of a bakery and had a moment of woe, but it wasn’t crazy.

And, the bonus is that I’ve incorporated some of these recipes into our routine, as well as other recipes from weeks 2-3. I have to give Whole Living magazine props for creating a great program and I would encourage you to try it. I can only imagine how I’d feel after 28 days of this. This is a great way to reset your mind and eating habits by eating delicious food!

And, for those who played hookey, drinking Budweiser (when you live in another country, on these occasions you go as American as you can) at 8am just is physically difficult. This is our third Super Bowl in the USA, and my husband treats it like a national holiday. I suppose it is, in a way. My big focus is Super Bowl party food. Thank goodness for Pinterest. In addition to a gourmet hot dog bar (if it goes down well, you’ll hear about it), I’m making (or would like to make):

Hot Pizza Dip
