Does Your Husband Have a Man Cave?

man cave home decor

If you are not sure what a “Man Cave” is, let me refer you to  Their first definition is:

A room, space, corner or area of a dwelling that is specifically reserved for a male person to be in a solitary condition, away from the rest of the household in order to work, play, involve himself in certain hobbies, activities without interuption. This area is usually decorated by the male that uses it without interferance from any female influence. Tom retreated to the Man Cave to play his online rpg game.

(For those of you not in the know, rpg stands for “roll playing game” like Dungeons and Dragons)

Their second definition is:

An emotional sanctuary for men when they’re stressed and need “space” or time away from females, responsibilities, etc.  Sam went offline and wouldn’t answer calls, retreating to his man cave to think.”

The other 2 definitions are not fit to print on this website.

The idea of a man cave first came to the attention of my husband after reading an article about Man Caves on MSNBC of all places.  He’s starting, slowly, to turn our guest bedroom into his man cave.  When he first brought up the subject, I vetoed it so strongly that La Jolla Girl says when asked about man cave that, “Man cave is NO NICE!!!”  Somehow, the room is still morphing in that direction. Keep in mind, if our house was huge and we had more space than we knew what to do with, a man cave would be no problem.

So, right now he just has a “dork closet” in the guest bedroom full of comics and other garbage. It’s not the greatest photo but I had to run in stealthfully to take it because my daughter is obsessed with the dork closet and we have a hard time keeping her out of it.  My husband is funny. He’s a Harvard-educated lawyer that retired early in life.

Does your husband have a man cave?  If he doesn’t, would you allow it?

I think a Man Cave is very good for your MAN! Because let’s face it ,The house is ALL OURS so why not let him have a little space of his own! My Husband works from home in an office attached to the garage and I think I have only entered it 3 times – it’s his he can do what he wants in there!

  • Jessica - This Is Worthwhile - August 25, 2009

Mine does and it’s called the garage. And it’s messy and cluttered and full of shite galore. I don’t understand it in the least. When I was pregnant, and nesting like crazy, I organized it no less than TWICE and it still fell back into disrepair within a month. I’ve since given up trying to make sense of it. However, I’m grateful it’s not in the house!

This is only the second time I’ve heard of a Man Cave. The first time was when my nephew & his fiance bought their house. There’s a Man Cave set up on the lower level of their split. I guess I’m behind the times. I would think that the Man Cave in our house would be the bathroom. LOL

Course our home is too small. What about she caves? We may get to decorate the rest of the house but let’s face it, it’s pretty much accessible by everyone else out. I want a room just for me.. a No Kids/Husband Zone if you will. Where things can be pretty and STAY pretty. *L*

That’s how we got together. So as of right now our living room is the “us cave.” We are big online gamers and such and my husband builds computers so we have two top of the line computers in our living room taking up a lot of space :) I hope to someday have a house with room for our us cave 😀

I am SO glad to read this and know that other wives are having issues with man caves. If we had a basement, I’d TOTALLY let T have a man cave.

As of now, he wants to turn our guest room (after my oldest daughter moves in with her little sister in the large bedroom) into some sort of bullet-making center with some odd metal contraption stuck onto my nice made-over white desk. NO!!!! That room is so pretty, with girly pink and green stripes on the walls.

Our Living room is sort of his room. His leather couch and chair are in there, his large TV, and he sits in there are freaking day when he’s home from work. I have a (family) painting of some hunting dogs up …I draw the line at dead animals on my walls though…even though he’d love it!

Hmmmm a man cave. My husband would like to think of the master bedroom as his own personal man cave, in many ways it is. All his stuff (everywhere) his dog – on the bed – his seat by the TV. It’s where you can find him after a long hard days work, with his snacks, his dog, tv remote in hand and a beer or two. He just tunes out what is going on in the house, if the teenagers and 20 somethings (we have 5) get to be too loud or too much for him to handle – he closes the door.

I’d also say, being out in the woods, is his natural ‘Man Cave’. He is never happier than when he is in the woods, yest, hunting, fishing etc.

    Happy SITS Day :)

My husband has an “office” that flirts with the idea of a man cave but I am constantly fighting it. He also likes to chill out in our bedroom which I call his cave. I don’t know if this counts so I guess “officially” he does not have a man cave.

I told my hubby that his man cave could be the garage and the shed. LOL! I wasn’t trying to be mean…we just don’t have the space after Baby Boy was born.

Oh yes, my husband has a man cave (a big one, too, while our triplets are sharing a room about half the size. He loves his kids, but his man cave…well, I won’t go there.) It’s got his computers. His old star wars and doctor who toys from his youth. He has it decorated like an English pub, complete with huge Guinness mirror and whiskey bottles on the walls.

He claims he has his cave, and the rest of the house is mine. Somehow…I don’t buy that.

Oh yes. He has his man cave. We call it “the shed” He can spend hours “tinkering” in the shed with tools, nail, workout equipment and various other man cave junk.

This is funny, particularly because a friend of mine’s husband has a man cave, which I just recently discovered. I’ll ask her to send you a pic, it’s wild.

Oh yes, my husband’s “man cave” used to be a spare upstairs bedroom, but when I used it for the new cat Manny when he first came into our home, my husband decided to use the basement as his man cave. My dad’s was his garage AND basement.

    Happy SITS day!

We’re in a 1 bedroom apartment which doesn’t leave a lot of room for a man cave, but when we’re in a bigger space there will be a man cave AND a woman cave!

Oh my goodness, my husband sooooo wants a man-cave. Although he doesn’t have one here in the house, he does have an allotment that he regularly retreats to. He has also stated that when we do eventually move, the new place MUST have some sort of workshop or shed that he can use. Suits me…. a bit of peace and quiet and control of the remote, works for me to!!

Mine’s got one. It’s just an extra bedroom in our basement. It drives me crazy! It’s a disaster. He is not the cleanest person in the world and whenever I mention cleaning it up he has a mini meltdown. It’s HIS room and he should be allowed to do what he wants with it. And for now I’m fine with that. But once I check a few more things off my to do list, I will be cleaning his man cave! :)

My husband doesn’t have one yet, but we are about to buy a house with a 3rd bedroom, and he is SO incredibly excited to create his Man Cave! I am excited about it too…I can’t wait to get all his man stuff out of my living area!

  • ThetaMom - July 8, 2009

I would say my husband’s man cave is the internet. He’s always connected (I’m probably just as guilty of this)! Whenever he needs some “time,” he’s online.

I had the hardest time finding you girl! Wren I click on you picture on the little follower widget it doesn’t give your link for some reason! Wow! I had no idea that there was a mancave site! Seriously? He still keeps his GI Joe figures? Cute. :)

I shouldn’t laugh, though. Hubby does shut himself off in the study to play his RPG’s and hd still has a stash of comic books (collector’s items, he says) back in my in-laws’ garage. LOL!
