Two Of Our Favorite La Jolla Happy Hours
On Monday, La Jolla Dad and I went to downtown La Jolla for some cocktails and dinner. We left the house around 4:00pm, which is early, but that’s the kind of people we are now. Happy hour in La Jolla is not-to-be-missed anyway.
Roppongi La Jolla
Our first stop was Roppongi, which is one of my personal favorites. I go there for tapas (1/2 price during happy hour), mainly to eat a Polynesian Crab Stack and maybe a sushi roll (this time it was the La Jolla Sunset), and then I’m stuffed. We ordered more than that, however. If you’re not feeling calorie conscious, I strongly suggest that you splurge for the Indian Spiced Kefir Cheese with Baked Flat Bread. We were able to secure a table outside with no problem (thank you, recession). Sometimes we avoid Roppongi because of the crowds which definitely materialized as we were leaving. All of the tables on the patio were occupied.
The food was excellent, however, the service was a teeny bit slow and the sun was blaring uncomfortably so we left earlier than we had planned. They also now have a nice summer cocktails list. I had the Pomegranate Martini and La Jolla Dad drank the Buddha’s Fist.

Happy hour from 3:00-7:00pm with 1/2 price tapas.
The Steakhouse At Azul
Afterward, we skipped on down to The Steakhouse at Azul. I hadn’t been there in a few years, but I intend to change that. They’ve got a patio area that has daily happy hour from 4:00-7:00pm and all day on Monday. No, that’s not us in the top photo, but that is the indoor restaurant at Azul.
The bargains on excellent food and drinks make it worth it not having too much of an ocean view from the patio, despite being on Prospect Street. The restaurant inside, however, has a fabulous view. Happy hour also applies to the bar area but on a nice sunny day, the patio is your best bet.
We drank our share of $6 happy hour martinis and split the Wagyu burger with bleu cheese and grilled onions. It comes with the best razor thin french fries. I was already stuffed from Roppongi but the burger is so good that we ordered it anyway. Everything on the Patio Menu, including the Wagyu burger, is half price during happy hour. Also, the pick for the non-calorie-conscious would be the Crispy Wood Roasted Artichokes with Creamy Roasted Garlic Drip. The service was impeccable. If a drink was ordered it, was delivered immediately. Our server was Sarah (can’t remember if there was an “h” or not) and she was fabulous. We appreciate excellent service and tip accordingly.

Happy hour from 4:00-7:00pm, all day on Mondays with 1/2 price patio menu and some discounted drinks.
I know what you’re thinking, that’s a lot of food ordered for one evening. It was. I pulled the rip cord and called La Jolla Star Transportation to come get us around 7:30pm because all I wanted to do was get in my pajamas and crawl into bed.
If you feel like spending the $$$ to skip happy hour and head straight for the main dining rooms at either of these establishments, by all means do it!
