La Jolla Dad had decided to throw an impromptu Laker’s party last weekend.  I rushed into San Diego Wine Company as it was on the way home from somewhere I had to be.  Per usual, they were right by my side to help within a minute of me walking in the door.  Normally I like to browse first, but I burst out that I needed a case of red wine suitable for a party.  We [...]

Wine Wednesday: Cloudline Pinot Noir 2007 (VONS, $15)

I was in a hurry at VONS, La Jolla. This Cloudline Pinot Noir was on sale for a $15 and change in a six pack carrier. I love Oregon Pinot Noirs. I always like to have decent Pinot Noir handy.  People like it.  I feel like after Sideways the movie came out, Pinot Noir became very trendy amongst people that don’t know wine all that well.  Fussy grapes and all that. Winemakers Notes: “On the [...]

If you like Malbec wines, you’re going to love this Layer Cake.  Beware though, it’s a bold one. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate gave this wine a 91 rating and said “Dense, with notes of blackberry, earth and roasted meats. Add a hint of barbecue spice, this wine exhibits great fruit, delicious full bodied texture, silky tannins and a long finish. It does taste more like a $30-$50 bottle of Malbec than one that can be [...]

Originally, I bought Bitch wine totally for the label.  I love the label. Though it was completely appropriate for my Cupcakes and Wine mom blogger party and I had just seen it on Mama Mary’s blog.  Grenache and red velvet cupcakes seems like it could work. La Jolla Dad is drinking Bitch wine as I type this, pretty sure he doesn’t know what it’s called, but most likely he doesn’t care. I paid around $12 [...]

Wine Wednesday: St Hallett Gamekeeper’s Shiraz, Barossa Australia

This is one of the wines I bought at Whole Foods Market, La Jolla the other day.  As I’ve mentioned previously, we love Shiraz from the Barossa region of Australia.  It’s a place I intend to visit someday. St Hallett was established in 1944 and all of their grapes are grown in the Barossa Valley.  The Barossa Valley is a diverse enough region to produce a variety of wines, but it has some of the [...]

What is a Dornfelder Wine? Review of Ampelos Epsilon 2007

What is Dornfelder you ask? That’s a good question. It’s a dark skinned grape originating in Germany. It’s the second most grown red wine grape in Germany and used to add pigment to pale wines. Germany’s viticulture is geared more toward white and pale red wines, otherwise. Dornfelder is not widely known in the US, however, it’s now able to be classified as it’s own varietal on Dornfelder wines produced in the US. I had [...]
