Create Your Own Fragrance At Tijon In La Jolla

Life is short and precious. It’s about feeling good, eating and drinking well while enjoying the pleasures in life. It’s about small moments of happiness when you find the time to stop and smell the roses or that gorgeous stranger who happens to walk past you. –Tijon

A few months ago, I attended a perfume making class hosted by the new Tijon Parfumerie on Herschel Avenue in La Jolla. To be honest, I wasn’t sure how I’d like it since perfume somehow disappeared from my routine after becoming a mother. However, based on my experience, I truly believe Tijon is a perfect addition to our seaside community and something that both locals and visitors should consider checking out for a one-of-a-kind experience.

And, no, Tijon is not just for women. Men can customize their own cologne and certainly utilize the adorable boutique for gift ideas. Remember, Mother’s Day is around the corner.

What is Tijon Parfumerie?

With roots in tropical St. Martin, Tijon is a family-owned and operated parfumerie and boutique. The St. Martin location opened in 2007 and has become a must-do for visitors to the beautiful island (just have a look at the TripAdvisor reviews). I expect Tijon to earn it’s way on to recommended La Jolla itineraries, too.

It isn’t obvious when you step into the La Jolla boutique, but there’s a professional lab in the back full of beakers, white coats, and 300 scents to play around with. This is where the fun, hands-on perfume classes take place.

About Tijon’s Perfume Making Classes

Tijon Parfumerie La Jolla Perfume Making ClassThe Mix & Match class I took was led by owner and founder, John Berglund, and his daughter, Rachelle Crumrine, who is spearheading the USA operations.  It is obvious that this business is a labor of love for the both of them, not to mention, they’re just genuinely nice people. We briefly covered the following topics but for more in-depth detail, sign up for the Perfume 101 Class:

  • Random facts about our sense of smell.
  • How our sense of smell works.
  • Perfume vocabulary, such as what exactly “crisp” or “fresh” means.
  • What perfume ingredients are derived from and how.
  • Perfume classifications.
  • How to create or select a perfume that’s right for you.

Next, we took our turns mixing scents. This was the fun part. Tijon bottles the fragrance you like best and keeps the recipe on file should you need to re-order it. And, you get to assign a special name to your perfume. The great thing about it is that it’s not necessarily a one-time thing–just like shoes, a gal or guy can create and use more than one perfume.

At $69-79 per class, including a large bottle of perfume that I actually use, it’s excellent value for money for a unique opportunity.
