La Jolla Mom - Uber San Diego: Valentine's Day Promo and New User Discount

You Should Uber (We Do) So Here’s A Discount Code And Valentine’s Day Promo

Uber San Diego

Why book a taxi, when you can book a black car at almost the same cost? Before Uber arrived in San Diego, we paid for black car service because we like the comfort, reliability, and relatively stress-free experience. We also don’t like hassling with cash or credit cards at the end of the ride, which is not an issue when you have an account with a black car service–or Uber.

How Uber Works

It’s very, very easy. Uber sources high-end sedans and SUVs and provides them to you at a discount.

  1. Download the Uber app to your smart phone.
  2. Sign up via the app or online and enter your credit card information.
  3. When you’re ready to ride, open the Uber app.
  4. GPS will spot where you are and tell you have far away your closest ride is.
  5. When you’re ready, click to summon your ride.
  6. At the end, your credit card is automatically billed and a receipt is sent to your email.
  7. Don’t tip your driver–that’s included in your rate.

The only drawback is that you can’t schedule your car in advance. Uber is strictly on-demand.

How Much Does Uber Cost

The big car is an SUV, which in my experience is a bit hard to come by. They are working on it, however. The smaller car is a sedan.

Base Fare
Start with this fare
$8.00 $15.00
Per Mile
Speed over 11mph
$3.50 $4.50
Per Minute
Speed at or below 11mph
$0.75 $1.00
Minimum Fare $15.00 $25.00
Cancellation fee $10.00 $10.00

Sure, there are flat fee rates, too. From La Jolla to SAN, it’s $50 including tip. That’s 35% cheaper than our normal black car service and within just a few dollars of a cab. A taxi from my house on Mt Soledad to downtown La Jolla is $20 including tip, sometimes a little more. That’s about as much as Uber, which is a much nicer ride.
