Wine Wednesday: Goose Ridge g3 2006 Red Wine

goose ridge wines

I hadn’t heard of Goose Ridge before, but knew that Washington has been cranking out some great wines. Goose Ridge is a family owned and operated winery in Washington’s Columbia Valley. This area of Washington is actually sun drenched and receives less than 8″ of rain a year! The Monson family has farmed in this valley for over four decades and their winery has made handcrafted, limited production wines since 1999. The name g3 represents three generations of the Monson family.

About the Wine:  It’s a blend of 49% Syrah, 35% Merlot, 16% Malbec and is aged for 20 months in French and American Oak Barrels.  g3 won a double gold medal at the Seattle Wine Awards. The retail price is $18. If I ever find myself in the area, this is a winery I’d like to visit.   We let the wine breathe for about an hour and then enjoyed it with pasta.

Winemakers Notes: “Like vineyards maturing with each season of growth, the Monson Family for three generations has worked hard to build upon the foundation of the previous generation. Goose Ridge Estate Vineyards and Winery is the result of an inherited passion and the realization of a family dream. our g3 is a tribute to family traditions, a reflection of hard work and a commitment to quality. g3 is a full bodied wine with deep garnet color and a lavish richness. Blackberry and dark cherry flavors blend with vanilla and toasty oak notes to create a round intense mouthful.”

Definitely blackberries and oak….yum.   It’s the kind of wine that puts you in a better mood – it worked with La Jolla Dad, thankfully.

Bottom line: La Jolla Dad loved this one and thought it tasted like it should cost much more than it does (I agree). He’s usually more of a critic than I am. I’ll be on the lookout for it around town and will let you know if I see it anywhere.  Otherwise, you can buy it direct from the winery.
