5 Places To Consider Adding To Your Travel Bucket List

BY La Jolla Mom

American Express (sponsors of this post) commissioned a LifeTwist study that revealed 88% of Americans put travel at the top of their bucket lists. If Americans could take a year off, 70% said they would travel to new places. The goal of the American Express #PassionProjectHH campaign is to inspire Americans to go out and get destinations on the bucket list ticket off.

What is on your bucket list? American Express is giving away Hilton gift cards to help people get up and GO (details below).

Need inspiration? Here’s what’s on our travel bucket list.

1.  The Great Wall Of China

Great Wall of China at Mutianyu

I’ve done it, but walking the Great Wall of China ranks #1 on my 6-year-old’s travel bucket list. The Great Wall of China at Mutianyu (pictured above) is an accessible area about an hour or so outside of Beijing and much less touristy than popular Badaling. My husband, however, was the tourist attraction last time we went as it’s not common to see people so tall over there (he’s 6’7″).

Visible from space, the Great Wall of China is, simply put, spectacular.

2. Chiang Mai

It’s all about the scenery, the elephants, Thai hospitality and spectacular cuisine. I’ve been to Thailand a few times but never Chiang Mai, which is home to elephant conservation centers that have saved these gorgeous creatures from peril. Elephants were critical to the logging trade which was banned in 1989 leaving many elephants to roam free, subject to killing for tusks, hide and meat. Not only do beloved elephants never forget, but they live very long lives. The caretakers at the conservation centers or mahouts, dedicate their lives to making sure these animals live out a peaceful and happy existence. That being said, it takes money to care for a large animal which is why some of these centers are open to the public. I’m totally O.K. with this and eager to visit, given the alternatives.

3. Dallas, Texas

So, this might be an oddball but as loyal customers of American Airlines, we’ve been to the DFW airport more times than we can count. We’ve just never left the airport. I think it’s about time to explore the city and eat some awesome barbecue.

We’ll head to the zoo and maybe even the State Fair if we get there in the fall, which is the plan.

4. Sanibel Island, Florida

Sanibel Island Beach Seashells

This peaceful Florida island is famous for seashells. And when I say seashells, I mean they cover the beach in some areas. Shelling is a big deal, with enthusiasts rising early in the morning to comb the beached for a prized find. Outside of the beach, protected trails for bicycling and wildlife viewing are also big deals.

5. Bora Bora

Interestingly enough, I can’t quite sell my husband on this tropical paradise. But, from the West Coast, it’s just a few hours further than Hawaii.
