San Diego is home to some truly remarkable Hyatt hotels, making it an excellent destination if you’re committed to the World of Hyatt loyalty program.
Choosing can be challenging, however, as all San Diego Hyatt hotels are wonderful in their unique way. Ultimately, it comes down to what you want in a getaway and how a particular location or lineup of amenities will deliver your dream San Diego trip.
To make this decision a bit easier, I’ve highlighted a few of my favorite San Diego Hyatt hotels for you to consider. And, if you’re not going to redeem points for your stay, we can book you in with extra perks through the Hyatt Prive program — and you’ll earn points.
We speak to readers and clients about San Diego hotels daily, so know what they’re booking. This list is also based on their feedback and information from our contacts on each property and personal experience.
1. Park Hyatt Aviara Resort, Golf Club, and Spa
Location: Carlsbad
Hotel class: Luxury
You want:
- to stay in one of our nicest resorts.
- play golf at an acclaimed course.
- a two bed room with two king beds
- recently-renovated rooms and suites.
- daily onsite resort activities.
- total rejuvenation during spa treatments.
- stunning views of the foothills or lagoon.
- to dine at an upscale restaurant exclusive to resort guests.
- a zero-entry family pool with small water slides and a splash pad.
- an adults-only pool experience.
- proximity to The Flower Fields, LEGOLAND California, and many other attractions.
Choose: Park Hyatt Aviara
This resort is among our most popular choices for families and is what I consider the top five luxury properties in all of San Diego. It’s one of our most requested and booked hotels.
The pool area is a big draw, and the entire resort is newly renovated. The rooms are sizeable enough that the two bed rooms have two king-sized beds, which parents particularly love. Single king rooms have sofa beds, should you prefer a seating area by day.
The Arnold Palmer specialty suite has a putting green on its terrace. But even more popular with our clients is the Fireside Terrace Suite which has two patios, with a fire pit on one of them.
You’ll easily stay entertained onsite, as this full-service resort boasts a variety of indulgent amenities, along with daily planned activities. Tee off at the Arnold Palmer-designed golf course or relax in the over 15,000-square-foot spa that includes a solarium lounge.

People worry that Carlsbad is “too far north” when visiting San Diego. We book hundreds of people annually here — the location is never a complaint.
2. Alila Marea Beach Resort Encinitas
Location: Encinitas
Hotel class: Luxury
You want:
- a quieter boutique hotel.
- a fire pit room with a large wrap-around sofa.
- an exclusive experience at one of the only Alila hotels in the United States.
- dramatic views of the California coastline.
- an eco-friendly stay at a resort that prioritizes sustainability.
Choose: Alila Marea Resort Encinitas
It is not a sprawling Hyatt San Diego resort but rather an intimate boutique hotel with great service — and that’s exactly what makes it stand out.
Sustainability is a priority here, as you’ll quickly notice when dining onsite. Locally-sourced ingredients make each meal wonderfully fresh, while the international flavors at the esteemed restaurant Vaga (make reservations in advance because it’s popular with locals) are sure to please.
The beach below is on the quieter side also, but Alila Marea Beach Resort will set up chairs and umbrellas for you. Note that the pool runs on the small side, but that’s typical for our boutique hotels.
Your room or suite has a soothing design that pairs minimalism with natural elements. Many rooms provide gorgeous coastal views and the fire pit rooms are very popular.

3. The Seabird Resort
Location: Oceanside
Hotel class: Moderate/Luxury
You want:
- a more reasonably-priced family beach hotel that is also nice.
- a North County San Diego location that’s convenient to Orange County.
- to enjoy the distinct vibes and separate amenities from an adjacent sister property.
- beach access within walking distance of your room.
- spa services or a makeover at the salon.
- casual restaurants and things to do within walking distance.
Choose: The Seabird Resort
As one of the more recent additions to San Diego’s Hyatt lineup, The Seabird Resort brings the best of the coastal vacation experience to Oceanside in the north end of San Diego County.
The resort is conveniently situated not only near the beach but also right next to the Mission Pacific. As sister hotels, these Oceanside gems provide full access to one another; if you stay at The Seabird, you can take advantage of Mission Pacific’s amenities — and vice versa.
Of course, there’s plenty to keep you happy right at The Seabird Resort. The pool deck invites you to soak in the sun, while the library provides a less expected — but equally wonderful — means of relaxing. Of the two, The Seabird is significantly more family-friendly with activities and amenities for kids.
Treat yourself to holistic rituals at Sunny’s Spa or enjoy a delicious meal on the patio at Piper. The Shelter Club brings the area’s best cocktails poolside.

You’ll find plenty of distinct opportunities at Mission Pacific that keep you onsite, however.
The hotel has many quirky offerings, such as memorable photo opportunities by the house from Top Gun. Its rooftop bar is downright legendary, as are the Guadalupe-inspired entrees at Valle.
Both Mission Pacific and The Seabird are excellent choices when you want to stay near the beach. In fact, the hotel’s staff can set up your beach chair and umbrella on your behalf, so all you need to do is stroll to the beach at your leisure.

This Marina District gem is a favorite among business travelers, although it provides plenty to keep vacationers happy.
Despite this hotel’s convenient location, you may never feel the need to travel offsite for meals. Instead, you can expect locally-sourced entrees served alongside exceptional California wine at multiple restaurants.
If nothing else, you should check out the Top of the Hyatt lounge on the 40th floor, where you’ll be astounded by the city panoramas.
