I’m often asked where to go in or near La Jolla for sushi. Cafe Japengo is certainly on my list and has been for well over a decade as I used to go every Thursday after work in my single days.
Located in the Aventine (in between Westfield UTC mall and UC San Diego) this award-winning Pacific Rim restaurant is a convenient place to meet friends as it’s near the I-5 freeway. This is a good thing because Cafe Japengo now offers three different happy hour choices!
Tip: The happy hour drinks have been designed to pair with the happy hour sushi rolls and Pacific Rim dishes. Ask your server for advice!
Guests can now savor half price sushi rolls—including traditional favorites and exclusive creations from Executive Chef Jerry Warner—between 4:00pm and 5:30pm Monday through Saturday at the restaurant’s sushi bar, which provides guests with a front and center view of their meal as it is created.
Cafe Japengo’s full portion happy hour features hot and cold choices like curry dusted calamari and sushi specials, $4 drafts including local craft beers and seasonal libations such as the Burning Sun, an infusion of house-made jalapeno syrup, lemon, orange, cranberry and Absolut Mandarin. Happy hour is available within the lounge and on the patio every weekday between 4:30pm and 7:00pm and between 4:30pm and 10:30pm on Saturdays.
Friday Lunch Happy Hour
Beginning this month, Cafe Japengo now complements its Friday lunch menu with half priced select bottles of wines, $4 hot sakes and $4 drafts between 11:00am and 2:00pm.
Tip: We accidentally stumbled upon this happy hour recently. Our bottle of champagne was a bargain at half price!
Also, don’t skip dessert. I highly recommend the warm lava cake and the tempura banana.
