La Jolla Boutiques: J.McLaughlin’s Stylish Prints and Wrinkle-Free Fabric

My first J.McLaughlin outfits arrived in the mail and, minutes later, were tossed into a suitcase and en route to Florida with me. Upon landing, I opened up my suitcase, shook out each piece, and marveled at the fact that this resort wear lacked wrinkles despite my lazy packing. Since then, I’ve been a fan of the brand, which is well-known for creating uber-classic American clothes that celebrate regional style.

The good news is that we now have San Diego’s first J.McLaughlin in La Jolla. The boutique is designed and stocked with our seaside town, and polished-yet-casual (and comfortable) look in mind.

The first thing you need to do is go into the store to touch, feel and try on the brand’s signature Catalina Cloth. It’s made of knit jersey with a touch of spandex that is soft, drapes well and doesn’t need ironing. I didn’t know any of this the first time I put on my Catalina Cloth dress so it was nice to discover its merits on my own. This is the perfect material for travelers and busy moms, of which I am both. If you golf or like lounging on a Hawaiian beach with an umbrella drink in-hand, you’ll find the perfect outfit here, too.

I am wearing the Lola Dress with Catalina Cloth and the La Jolla Cardigan (I read the name and had to have it). The dress is very forgiving as the material doesn’t show anything you don’t want it to. This Rhett Embroidered Tunic Dress in Gingham I’m holding is also currently very popular (and how cute it would be with the hat in the photo).

Another good fuss-free option is the Sage Rouched Dress in Astor Tile with its flattering cut. It’s also made from the glorious Catalina Cloth. This is a style that comes in other patterns, too.

I am currently on the lookout for outfits I need for an incredibly busy travel conference in Las Vegas. I’ve been advised to dress as comfortably as possible to survive long days and I think this Charlene Maxi Dress in Sunbleached Mosaic (pictured right, below) will work when paired with my La Jolla Cardigan.

The store is also well-stocked with accessories like hats, handbags and sunglasses.

I particularly love that J.McLaughlin sunglasses are polarized. I’m a convert to polarized sunglasses and it’s so hard to find stylish pairs. I promise that you will see so much clearer and more comfortably because these lenses are expert at filtering out glare. We do live at the beach, after all. (I had just picked up these glasses which is why a few are a bit out-of-place.)

Men are not to be left out either, as they’ll find fabulous shirts, shorts, pants and even swimwear here.

I also have a black J.McLaughlin cotton tunic that I wear all of the time. The cotton has a bit of stretch in it which I adore. It’s so comfortable and travels well.
