Fall is my dream season for travel. The weather in many destinations we prefer has cooled down as have the crowds. The beginning of fall is also shoulder season, meaning that it’s possible to take advantage of still-pleasant weather at much lower pricing than during peak season. And then when the leaves start to turn color in many parts of the world, travel becomes a photographer’s dream.
Our next #KidsNTrips family travel Twitter chat is in partnership with American Express and we’ll talk about the best destinations for fall travel as well as how to maximize spending. Hint: One way to ease cost by booking fall (or any) travel using points earned with the Hilton HHonors Card from American Express.
My Favorite Fall Destinations
I have to plug my hometown of San Diego because right now it’s 85 degrees and perfect beach weather. I would recommend a stay (or staycation) at Hilton San Diego Resort and Spa on Mission Bay for the abundance of water sports, great hotel pool, fire pits outside some rooms and close proximity to the airport.
Last fall, I spent time in Cancun, Mexico. It was hot, but not as hot as the area can be, so I welcomed a poolside margarita amid cooler ocean breezes. Fall is also prime sea turtle release season in many parts of Mexico. Watching the babies flop into the ocean nearly made my heart explode with joy and is definitely an experience on my to-do list with my daughter. You may want to try the beachfront Hilton Cancun Golf and Spa Resort.
In Hawaii, September kicks off couples season when resorts have less kids and more activities geared toward couples and singles. Boozy shave ice, anyone? The massive, luxurious Grand Wailea is a Hilton property. I prefer this exclusive Maui enclave as Wailea is less busy and a touch more upscale than other parts of the island.
The August heat and humidity in Asia melts popsicles with lightning speed but October in Hong Kong is my favorite time of the year. It’s also Mid-Autumn festival, the second most important holiday to Chinese New Year, and a time for mooncakes, beautiful decor and happy vibes. There, I like the Conrad Hotel in the Admiralty neighborhood because it houses some of the city’s best restaurants, is walkable to the Central district and sits on top of a luxury shopping mall.
Wherever you go, you’ll still need to pay for it. And, paying less for something fabulous is almost always the way to go.
