La Jolla Mom

The Spa at Rancho Bernardo Inn

I was invited to an event at  The Spa at Rancho Bernardo Inn a few weeks ago. As I’ve mentioned many times before, I love spas.

It’s a fairly easy drive to the Rancho Bernardo Inn from La Jolla, at about 30 minutes each way, mostly on the freeway. I arrived and was taken in a golf cart to the spa, though I easily walked back to my car at the end of my treatment. Unfortunately, I had to leave the event early to pick up La Jolla Girl from preschool, but everyone raved about the lunch.

I checked in while admiring the spa boutique. A staff member escorted me to my locker while giving a mini  tour of the newly renovated facility. Once robed, I went into the cozy lounge area to wait for my therapist. I could have stayed in this area for a long time. The furniture was comfortable and the offerings of drinks and snacks were noticeably spa like.

I chose the Coffee Berry Brightening and Revitalizing Facial. Here is the description from the spa brochure:

“Coffee berry is nature’s most potent botanical, full of antioxidants to help fight the causes of skin aging. Ideal for all skin types, it decreases the appearance of fine lines and helps even out skin tones while brightening and hydrating the skin. Treatment includes a deep cleansing with the aid of the Clarisonic system, exfoliation for face and back, extractions, enzymatic masque, massage for face and hands, ending with moisturizer and sunscreen. This natural experience will leave you relaxed with brighter, healthier skin.”

I wasn’t expecting the facial to be such a full body experience, but in the end I appreciated that. The next day I was headed to the Viceroy in Palm Springs for another event and going to be in my bathing suit. The Clarisonic was used not only on my face but on my back too. I own a Clarisonic, but never ever thought about using it on my back nor am I flexible enough to do so. I left the treatment with glowing skin all over and feeling much more relaxed in my neck and shoulders. If you want your face to be the focus of your facial, choose a different one. My therapist also recommended a few products based on my skin type. I bought one: the Eminence Citrus Exfoliating Wash. I often have buyers remorse when I do this, but this product is amazing.

I took a quick walk around the facility before I had to leave. It’s very pretty, not terribly large, but definitely deserves the luxury spa title. In my opinion, a good spa should have extensive lounging facilities. Not just a sauna and some cucumber water, but an area where you can envision yourself spending the entire day and still dread leaving. Like this:

There’s a reason why The Spa at Rancho Bernardo Inn was voted Best Outdoor Spa by San Diego Magazine. This is the Alfresco Relaxation Lounge and hydro-therapy pool. You may also have your treatment in an outdoor casita. We have consistent weather year round in San Diego, but you’ll be able to enjoy yourselves plenty in just the indoor lounge on the odd day that it’s raining.

It’s a beautiful spa and I wish I could have stayed all day. Take a break from the kids and try it.

  1. I just found your blog and was captivated by the title. La Jolla is one of my favorite places in the U.S. and where I honeymooned and hope to someday own property. I will be following to live vicariously through you in the details of La Jolla!
