Have to admit Whisknladle is one of our favorite places to eat in La Jolla right now. If you’re visiting from out of town or a local that hasn’t been yet, you should try it. Whisknladle is known for it’s fresh, simple food. Their dishes aren’t complicated or fussy and they taste fantastic. The post photo is of the Cutting Board (artisan meats, cheeses, mustards and spreads) which we always order. It’s so yummy.
La Jolla Dad orders the Carlsbad Aqua Farms Mussels & Fries and I love trying different things though the Whisknladle Caesar salad is my stand by. They can put chicken on it. Or, I order the Main Scallops. The muscles are in the photo and the fries come on the side in another dish. La Jolla Girl went to town on the fries and Cutting Board.
Whisknladle Happy Hour
Whisknladle has Happy Hour 7 days a week from 5-7pm. Last night we got there at 5:10pm and the bar/lounge area was totally full 10 minutes later. So get there early, because it’s not a huge area. We had La Jolla Girl with us when we went, which was not ideal, but that’s how we had to roll. She was totally fine. We had the one corner spot in the lounge. Otherwise, it’s not a great happy hour for kids just because of the space constraints. Foodwise, La Jolla Girl loved her big lemonade and the $3 tapas, as did we. They are small portions but remember that’s how tapas are. Bottles of wine are 25% off and they have $20 pitchers of sangria.
A Weird, But Delicious Cocktail
La Jolla Dad also loves this cocktail called “London is Burning” which is a martini style drink that has jalapeno and avocado in it. I know, it sounds super weird, but it’s bizarrely good. I’ve never, ever tasted anything like it. Ever. This is not the greatest photo of it. If you can tolerate spicy, try this drink.
Don’t Skip Dessert
Do not leave Whisknladle without trying the Butterscotch Burino. That is, if it’s on the menu, which is seasonal. I wish I took a picture of it last time, but it was devoured too quickly. It”s a delicious mix of salty and sweet, which is a combination I wouldn’t normally go for. If you ask the staff what their dessert pick is, it’s usually this one. Fleur de Sel Carmel, Crème Fraiche & Pine Nut Cornmeal Cookies. Trust me, just order it. I’ve never been let down by their desserts.
I would say that you’ll have a better time if you leave the kids at home, though there’s plenty for them to eat there. Go to Whisknladle for Date Night or meet a small group of friends there for Happy Hour.
