A Book for Middle Grade Kids with Words to Live By (Giveaway)

BY La Jolla Mom

Books are a treasure and it’s such a joy to see my 9-year-old finally read age-appropriate novels for hours on end. It is my pleasure to tell you about a brand new book, released today, that is geared toward middle grade kids (ages 8 – 12) called Word of Mouse by best-selling author Jimmy Patterson.

Patterson’s newest illustrated middle grade story follows the illuminating journey of a very special mouse, and the unexpected friendships that he makes along the way. Not only is it a fun book to read, but there are little words to live by inserted at the beginning of each chapter that, frankly, all ages should pay attention to. I love it when books like this have positive messaging woven in to the story.

About Word of Mouse

Words to live by inspired by the new middle grade book called "Word of Mouse".

What makes Isaiah so unique? First, his fur is as blue as the sky—which until recently was something he’d never seen, but had read all about. That’s right—Isaiah can read, and write. He can also talk to humans…if any of them are willing to listen! After a dramatic escape from a mysterious laboratory, Isaiah is separated from his “mischief” (which is the word for a mouse family), and has to use his special skills to survive in the dangerous outdoors, and hopefully find his missing family. But in a world of cruel cats, hungry owls, and terrified people, it’s hard for a young, lone mouse to make it alone. When he meets an equally unusual and lonely human girl named Hailey, the two soon learn that true friendship can transcend all barriers.
Be careful with your heart. Once it’s broken it’s hard to find spare parts.”
Your Words to Live By

As our daughter progresses toward middle school, we find ourselves constantly relaying little tips and phrases to her which are very similar to the ones that Isaiah starts each chapter with.

With this in mind, I asked my daughter to write down her favorite quote and she chose, “It’s Cool to Be Kind.” (Her other favorites are quoted throughout this post, too.)

She started reading the book here in our little green huts by the beach while I edited photos. It’s one of our favorite places to chill out on weekend mornings. Even the dog was birdwatching.

Isaiah’s words of wisdom aren’t always serious—in fact the book has a lighthearted tone throughout so she’d chuckle every once in a while.
