USS Midway Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe from 1945

Cooks onboard the longest-serving aircraft carrier of the 20th century often made these chocolate chip cookies in the galley. It's a flexible recipe that you can turn into bars as well.
Servings: 8 dozen cookies/7-8 dozen 1 3/4" bars

Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb butter
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1.5 tsp. salt
  • 4 cups and 8 tbsp. flour
  • 1 large bag of chocolate chips more if you prefer

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees
  2. Cream butter well.
  3. Add sugar and brown sugar to butter and cream together.
  4. Add eggs and vanilla and mix well.
  5. Combine baking soda, salt and flour in a separate bowl.
  6. Add dry ingredients to the wet mixture.
  7. Stir in chocolate chips
  8. Spoon on to baking sheet (or jelly roll pan if making bars)
  9. Bake for 8-10 minutes (cookies) or 13-15 minutes (bars) or until the edges start to brown.

Notes

Make the cookies or bars as big or small as you like.
