Whether you need a place to sleep before flying out or a place to base an entire vacation, these hotels near San Diego airport have you covered. The choices are all major hotel brands that frequent fliers use and offer amenities suited for business and leisure travel.

These San Diego hotels are all within a mile or two of the airport, as we don’t have any hotels in the San Diego airport. Three of the hotels are on the larger side for those who prefer a wide range of services and amenities, while the rest are mostly popular suite hotels in convenient locations. Several offer free airport shuttles and free breakfast, which I’ve noted under each hotel below.

Where San Diego Airport Hotels Are Located

Forget long drives from airports on the outskirts of town. San Diego International Airport (SAN) is actually located right in downtown San Diego, minutes from major attractions. It’s unusual for a major airport to be so close to the action, but it’s also what makes our city so appealing (and apparently slightly frightening for pilots to land planes in).

San Diego airport hotels are located in four main areas: Harbor Island (in front of the airport), Liberty Station, the edge of Little Italy, or along the San Diego Bay. Any of these hotels puts you within minutes of popular things to do in downtown San Diego, Old Town San Diego, the San Diego Zoo, and Balboa Park.

If you have time to go out to eat or enjoy the city’s nightlife, you could also consider a downtown San Diego hotel, though many there do not offer complimentary airport shuttles. Alternatively, to access the fun in the Gaslamp Quarter, simply take a cheap Uber from one of the hotels on this list.

Tip: Navigating Airport Construction

San Diego’s brand new Terminal 1 opened in late 2025, but the airport is still in the middle of a massive construction project. Phase 1B is underway, and the roadway connecting Terminals 1 and 2 has been affected by detours. Traffic around the airport can be slow, so give yourself extra time, especially if you’re catching a hotel shuttle. Courtesy shuttles pick up at the transportation plazas across from both terminals. If you don’t see your hotel’s shuttle, call the hotel for an estimated arrival time.

1. Sheraton San Diego Resort (Top Pick)

Address: 1380 Harbor Island Drive, San Diego, CA 92101
Distance from SAN: 0.5 miles
Airport shuttle: Yes (every 30-40 minutes, 4:45 a.m. – 12 a.m.)

The Sheraton San Diego Resort is a great family or business hotel near the San Diego airport

Why go: The Sheraton San Diego Resort is the closest hotel to San Diego International Airport and offers enough amenities that it actually could be the base of an entire San Diego vacation.

Families love the outdoor pool, its proximity to downtown San Diego attractions like Seaport Village and the USS Midway Museum, and the panoramic bay views from some rooms. Business travelers are fans of its great location.

The Sheraton completed a $100 million renovation in Fall 2024, upgrading all rooms with a modern coastal vibe, improving the pools and all communal areas, and introducing several new dining concepts. It is also for travelers who would like to enjoy the amenities of a large hotel with access to water sports before flying out.

This San Diego airport hotel is located on Harbor Island, a spit of land just a 5-minute drive from downtown San Diego. Harbor Island is on San Diego Bay, so there’s no beach. But there are views of the harbor, including sailboats and sometimes large Navy ships. Sunsets over the water to the downtown horizon can be spectacular. As evidence of that, several nice restaurants are also located on Harbor Island and within walking distance of the hotel, tout their waterfront and sunset views.

Good to know: It may be across the street from the airport, but it would take you about 15 minutes to walk from Terminal 2. A taxi ride will cost around $10. The Port of San Diego operates a shuttle from the area of the hotel to several downtown attractions as well between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Downtown is so close that hiring an Uber to drive you there will not be expensive. You can also walk to the popular Coasterra restaurant in less than 15 minutes.

Reservations: Check rates on Expedia or book direct on Marriott.com.

2. Hilton San Diego Airport/Harbor Island

San Diego Bay view from a king room at Hilton San Diego Airport.

Why go: While there are several popular San Diego Hilton hotels near the San Diego airport (and on this list), this one is the largest. It’s also located on Harbor Island (a bit further in than the Sheraton), about a mile from the airport.

It’s the San Diego airport hotel choice for Hilton Honors members (you can use a Digital Key to enter your room). The 211-room hotel touts its resort-like setting, with balconies overlooking the harbor, marina, and downtown skyline. The views can be truly spectacular and seen from many rooms.

San Diego Bay Adventures is a few steps away where you can rent jet skis, kayaks, and SUPs to explore the bay.

Free breakfast: No (Club InterContinental guests get complimentary breakfast)

View of Coronado from an InterContinental San Diego room

Why go: You’d like to stay in a larger luxury hotel with a Club Level that is also walkable to Little Italy, Seaport Village, and the Gaslamp Quarter. It’s not the closest hotel to San Diego Airport, but it’s an easy drive. You can even see the airport from the hotel.

InterContinental San Diego has multiple dining options onsite, including the upscale Vistal Bar + Restaurant.

Hotel amenities:

  • Outdoor bar with views of the bay
  • All rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows and water views

However, if you are looking for a full-service luxury hotel near San Diego Airport, this is your choice (and a good one). Otherwise, drive another mile to Pendry San Diego, my favorite urban boutique hotel (city views only).

Reservations: As a preferred partner with IHG, I can arrange benefits like room upgrades, complimentary breakfast, and late checkout at InterContinental San Diego. Contact me to book with VIP benefits. You can also check rates on IHG.com.

Sunset on the balcony overlooking the water at Wyndham San Diego Bayside
View from my suite

Why go: The Wyndham San Diego Bayside is a large, full-service hotel right on the waterfront with something none of the other hotels on this list can match: every single room has a balcony with bay views. The rooms themselves are dated, but when you’re sitting on your balcony watching the sailboats and Navy ships go by with the downtown skyline in the background, you won’t care as much.

The hotel is directly across from the cruise terminal (you can walk there) and within easy walking distance of Little Italy, where you can pick up wine, pizza, meatball subs, and whatever else you need for an evening on that balcony. The USS Midway Museum and the Embarcadero are also a short walk away. The kids can play downstairs at the adjacent Waterfront Park.

It has three onsite restaurants: Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, Hazelwood’s Bayside Cafe, and Claim Jumper. There’s also a complimentary daily yoga class poolside, which is a nice touch.

Hotel amenities:

  • Balconies with bay views from every room
  • Three onsite restaurants, including Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse
  • Outdoor pool
  • Fitness center
  • Bike and Segway rentals
  • Across the street from the cruise terminal
  • Complimentary daily yoga class

Good to know: The hotel is walking distance to Little Italy and the Embarcadero, so you don’t need a car once you’re here. The shuttle runs frequently enough that you don’t need to call ahead — just head to the courtesy shuttle pickup area at the airport and look for the white van with blue lettering.

Reservations: Check rates on Expedia or book direct on Wyndham.com.
