But if the Zoo is the reason for the trip, you are not staying long, and you want the least friction possible, these ten work. The closest is a four-minute drive from the entrance. Driving distances are measured to the Zoo parking lot entrance on Zoo Place. Times are approximate and vary with traffic. The nearest hotels are about a 30-minute walk from the Zoo entrance, so most guests drive or take a rideshare, which runs under 15 minutes from any of these neighborhoods. Parking at the Zoo is now paid rather than free, so factor that in if you drive.
1. Pendry San Diego (Gaslamp Quarter)
Gaslamp Quarter. San Diego’s main dining and nightlife district. Walkable to Petco Park for Padres games and concerts.
Pendry San Diego is a top downtown San Diego hotel for luxury travelers and one of the best hotels near San Diego Zoo if you want an upscale home base. Its specialty is blending modern with historic throughout the property, from the rooms to Lionfish (the signature farm-to-table restaurant), Provisional, Nason’s Beer Hall, the Fifth & Rose lobby cocktail bar, and the rooftop Pool House.
The 317 rooms include 36 suites with posh linens and stylish decor. I love the excellent service and Gaslamp Quarter location, within walking distance of dozens of bars and restaurants, plus the San Diego Convention Center and Petco Park. Pendry is part of Montage International.
Standard rooms have walk-in rain showers (no bathtubs), while suites add deep soak tubs and sofa beds in the living area. All rooms come with MiN New York bath amenities, fully stocked mini-bars, and 50-inch TVs. The rooftop pool has cabanas and poolside service. Valet parking only (no self-parking).

Good to know: All downtown hotels pick up some street noise, so request a higher floor or a quiet-side room. The pool area leans adult-centric on weekends, especially when pool parties are on the calendar. Not ideal for families with small children during peak times. 2. The US Grant, a Luxury Collection Hotel (Gaslamp Quarter)
Gaslamp Quarter. Walkable to restaurants in every direction, with the trolley a block away.
THE US GRANT is one of two luxury hotels near San Diego Zoo on this list, located across from Horton Plaza Park and within walking distance to many of San Diego’s best restaurants. It’s close enough to the downtown buzz yet far enough away so that noise and chaos aren’t so much of an issue.
This downtown San Diego hotel has a fascinating history spanning more than a century. More than a dozen U.S. presidents and countless celebrities have stayed here since it opened in 1910. After careful restoration to modernize while preserving historic features, THE US GRANT is better than ever.
The hotel has 270 rooms, and its suites run from 400 to 750 square feet, with separate living rooms in the larger ones. The Grant Grill has been a San Diego dining institution since the 1950s. Connecting rooms are also available for families.

3. Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Downtown
Downtown. Northern edge of the Gaslamp, walkable to restaurants and the trolley.
The Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Downtown is located in the former San Diego Trust & Savings Bank building dating from 1928. One of the conference rooms is behind the original 47,000-pound Mosler bank vault door. The 14-story building was designed by William Templeton Johnson in the Italian Romanesque Revival style, and the conversion to a hotel preserved the historic details beautifully.
The result is a blend of historic and modern that feels more elevated than a typical Courtyard. Gold Reserve Kitchen and Bar serves California cuisine with daily happy hour, and there’s an on-site Starbucks. Restaurants and nightlife are just a couple blocks away at the northern edge of the Gaslamp Quarter, and the trolley stop is one block away.
Rooms include microwaves and mini-fridges, and the one-bedroom suites are typically reasonably priced, making this a solid value pick for families.
Good to know: Valet parking only (no self-parking). There is no pool. Rooms near the street side can pick up nightlife noise, especially on weekends near Petco Park. Promotions are listed under the hotel website’s deals tab.

4. Porto Vista Hotel (Little Italy)
Little Italy. Arguably San Diego’s best walkable dining neighborhood, with the Saturday Mercato right outside.
Located in the popular Little Italy neighborhood, Porto Vista Hotel is a family-owned boutique hotel with 190 mid-century style guest rooms and an art collection throughout the property. The GlassDoor Restaurant on the fourth floor serves Mexican cuisine with panoramic views of the downtown skyline and San Diego Harbor. It’s a great spot for happy hour.
The shops and restaurants of Little Italy are right outside your door, including the Saturday Mercato farmers market, one of the best in San Diego. It’s a fantastic choice for people who want a nice, reasonably-priced hotel near San Diego Zoo in a walkable location that isn’t part of a chain.
The rooftop has a small heated “spool” (spa/pool combination) with views, and it is dog-friendly. There is also a salon, a Thai massage studio and an EV charging station on site.
Good to know: Breakfast at GlassDoor is served on weekdays, with brunch on weekends, and it is not complimentary. Porto Vista’s complimentary shuttle service (airport, convention center, cruise terminal) is not currently running. Plan on a rideshare or rental car. Rooms are on the smaller side.

5. The Lafayette Hotel & Club (North Park)
North Park. Artsy neighborhood known for craft breweries and independent restaurants. The hotel’s own dining is a destination, and the 30th Street corridor is a short drive south.
The Lafayette is a historic San Diego boutique hotel in the North Park neighborhood near Balboa Park that opened in 1946. At the heart of the hotel is the Weissmuller Olympic Pool, designed by Johnny Weissmuller, former Tarzan star and five-time Olympic gold medalist. Do plan time to unwind at the pool.
Speaking of Hollywood, the “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” bar scene in Top Gun was filmed here, and early guests included Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, and Bing Crosby. The hotel completed a $31 million restoration and reopened in 2023, then earned a Michelin Key in 2025 as the only San Diego property on that list.
Today you’ll find Beginner’s Diner (open 24 hours), Quixote, an Oaxacan-inspired restaurant and mezcaleria, Lou Lou’s Jungle Room for live music, and The Gutter (a game room with a two-lane bowling alley). Each of the 139 rooms is named after a film star. Unlike most hotels on this list, this one is NOT in downtown San Diego. North Park is well-known for some of San Diego’s best casual restaurants and cool shops.
Good to know: The pool can be crowded on weekends. Since the renovation, the hotel is more adult-centric. Better for couples and friends than families with small children. It is dog-friendly.

6. Hilton Garden Inn San Diego Downtown/Bayside (Little Italy)
Little Italy / Embarcadero. Little Italy restaurants are a 5-minute walk. The Maritime Museum and USS Midway are a short walk along the harbor.
The Hilton Garden Inn San Diego Downtown/Bayside is within walking distance to Little Italy, Downtown San Diego, and San Diego Bay, with quick access to nearby San Diego International Airport as well. Since Hilton hotels in San Diego are incredibly popular with families, and this one has in-room microwaves and mini-refrigerators, it’s a practical option with a great location.
The heated indoor/outdoor rooftop pool and spa with panoramic city and bay views is genuinely impressive, especially at sunset. Bayside Kitchen + Bar serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and happy hour on-site. Hilton Digital Key lets you bypass the front desk, and cribs are available.
It’s not the closest hotel to the San Diego Zoo on this list, but it’s a solid choice for families who want to walk to Little Italy for dinner and have the conveniences that a Hilton Garden Inn reliably delivers. Connecting rooms are available.
Good to know: The 24-hour Pavilion Pantry Market has snacks and essentials if you arrive late. Coin-operated laundry on-site is a real perk for families on longer trips.

7. Marriott Vacation Club, San Diego
Downtown. A few blocks north of the Gaslamp. Walkable to restaurants but in a quieter part of downtown.
The Marriott Vacation Club is a 264-suite property in downtown San Diego, adjacent to Symphony Hall and a few blocks from the Historic Gaslamp Quarter. It’s popular with larger families because every suite has a kitchenette with a microwave, mini-refrigerator, coffee maker, dishwasher, toaster, sink, silverware, and dishes, which can save you a significant amount on meals, especially with kids.
Suites were renovated in 2023 and include one-bedroom king suites (sleeps 4), one-bedroom double suites with sofa beds (sleeps 6), and two-bedroom suites. SHAKE Bar & Lounge is the on-site restaurant and cocktail bar, and The Marketplace Express handles grab-and-go. The indoor pool is a plus for families visiting on cooler days.
If you’re looking for a hotel near San Diego Zoo that can comfortably accommodate a bigger group with the comforts of home, this is your best bet on the list.
Good to know: No pets. There is a 24-hour fitness center on-site.

8. Best Western Downtown San Diego
Cortez Hill. Residential, so dinner means the walk down to the Gaslamp or a short drive, but it’s the shortest drive to the Zoo.
The Best Western Downtown San Diego (formerly Cabrillo Garden Inn) is a small 30-room hotel in downtown San Diego and the closest hotel to the San Diego Zoo on this list by driving distance. It gets consistently great reviews for being friendly, clean, and comfortable, with more character than other budget hotels.
You may read reviews from people who say you can walk to the Zoo from here, and while it’s technically possible, it’s about a 30-minute walk through Balboa Park. Most guests drive or take a rideshare. The shops and restaurants of the Gaslamp Quarter are a 10-15 minute walk away.
This is a no-frills hotel, but it’s well-reviewed and in a great location for the Zoo at a price that’s hard to beat in San Diego.
Good to know: Free full breakfast with hot items and free WiFi are included. In-room refrigerators and coffee/tea makers in every room. No pets allowed. Adjoining rooms are available. The hotel has a rooftop terrace. No pool.

9. Holiday Inn Express San Diego Downtown
Downtown. The Gaslamp is about a 10-minute walk south, Little Italy about 12 minutes west.
This Holiday Inn Express sits in downtown San Diego with easy access to Balboa Park. You can walk to the park’s boundary in about seven minutes, though reaching the Zoo entrance on foot takes closer to 30 minutes. Most guests drive or rideshare.
It’s a reliable budget hotel near San Diego Zoo that consistently gets solid reviews for cleanliness and the included hot breakfast. The location isn’t the most charming stretch of downtown, but it’s well-connected, and on-site self-parking is unusual downtown, where most hotels offer valet only.
There is an outdoor pool with downtown skyline views, though the hotel has posted that its pool and driveway are temporarily closed for maintenance, with no reopening date given. Mini-fridges are in every room, and the IHG app lets you choose your room in advance.
Good to know: Some rooms pick up street noise, so request a higher floor if you’re a light sleeper. You might see on other websites that this hotel offers a complimentary shuttle, but it does not, so plan to drive or rideshare. 10. Inn at the Park (Bankers Hill)
Inn at the Park is a registered historic building in the Bankers Hill neighborhood, right across the street from Balboa Park. It offers 82 studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom suites, each with a kitchenette. If you want to save on dining during a longer stay, this is the hotel to book.
Bankers Hill is adjacent to Hillcrest, another San Diego neighborhood well-known for outstanding casual dining. The park is at your door, though the Zoo entrance is still about a 30-minute walk around the Highway 163 canyon, so most guests drive. By car it’s 2.3 miles and about 7 minutes. There is also a grocery store, a gym, a rooftop terrace and guest laundry on site, which makes a longer stay easy to provision.
Good to know: This is a Club Wyndham timeshare property that is also available to non-timeshare guests, and Wyndham actively markets ownership tours, so be prepared to decline a sales pitch. Valet parking is available with in/out privileges, or you can try street parking, which is usually challenging in this area. Wyndham has posted that the property is renovating its HVAC systems until further notice, so heating or cooling may be unavailable in some rooms. No pool.
