If you’re looking for the best shopping mall in San Diego, Westfield UTC is it. What started as an ordinary indoor mall back when it was called University Towne Centre has been transformed through nearly a billion dollars in renovations into an open-air, resort-style destination with activities that go far beyond retail therapy.

I’ve been shopping and dining here since my freshman year at UC San Diego, and I still discover something new almost every visit. Here’s what you need to know before you go.

If you’re visiting the area, Westfield UTC pairs well with a day exploring the coast. See my full guide to things to do in La Jolla, just a 15-minute drive away.

What to Expect

Westfield UTC is an outdoor mall, so think California sunshine and landscaped plazas rather than a traditional enclosed shopping center. The layout spans several levels, connected by walkways, escalators, and elevators, and is anchored by Nordstrom and Macy’s, with more than 280 tenants in between.

The mall has leaned heavily into luxury in recent years, with boutiques like Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co., and Rolex alongside popular brands like Lululemon, Zara, and Free People. A major expansion is underway on the old Nordstrom site (before it moved to its new building) along La Jolla Village Drive, bringing new designer boutiques, two restaurants, and a second valet area when it opens in 2026.

See the store directory for the latest tenant list, as shops and restaurants rotate frequently, so always check before visiting.

Getting There

Westfield UTC is located at 4545 La Jolla Village Drive in the University City area of San Diego, right off the I-805 at the La Jolla Village Drive exit. It’s about a 10-minute drive from La Jolla Village and the coast.

By trolley: The UTC Transit Center is the northern terminus of the San Diego Trolley’s Blue Line, and it’s right at the south end of the mall. If you’re staying downtown or near Old Town, this is a genuinely convenient option and means you don’t have to worry about parking at all.

Parking: The first two hours of parking are free. After that, it’s a modest hourly rate. Certain tenants like AMC Theatres, Seasons 52, and 24 Hour Fitness offer extended validation. See the Westfield UTC parking page for current rates and details.

Valet: A luxury four-lane valet drive-up is on La Jolla Village Drive near the corner of Genesee Avenue, next to Javier’s and Lucrezia. It includes complimentary Tesla charging. See the Westfield UTC valet page for current rates and hours.

Rideshare: A designated Uber/Lyft drop-off and pick-up area is located next to Room & Board, with shaded seating while you wait.

Electric vehicles: ChargePoint stations are on level P1 of the Genesee Garage, and Electrify America DC fast chargers are in the Macy’s parking lot off Lombard Place.

Hours: General mall hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Individual stores and restaurants set their own hours, so check with specific tenants if you’re making a special trip. See Westfield UTC opening hours for details.

Dining

The dining scene at Westfield UTC could justify a visit even if you never set foot in a store. You’ll find everything from quick bites and boba to full-service restaurants with patios. Almost every restaurant has outdoor seating, which is one of the best things about eating here.

Casual and trendy eats:

  • Board & Brew — A San Diego original. Fresh sandwiches, craft beer, and their cult-following Secret Sauce. Perfect for a quick, affordable lunch between shops. I like the turkey deluxe.
  • Ramen Nagi — Tokyo-born ramen with customizable bowls. Pick your broth (the squid ink Black King is a must-try), noodle thickness, and toppings. Expect a line — it moves fast.
  • Wushiland Boba — Taiwanese boba with excellent quality tea and perfectly chewy pearls. The brown sugar milk tea is the one to get.
  • Haidilao Hot Pot — The biggest hot pot chain in China, and their UTC location is a full experience: noodle-dancing servers, a DIY sauce bar, lobby cocktail bar, and a stuffed animal companion if you’re dining solo. Great for groups. We go here all the time.
  • Katsuya Ko — Brand new (opened February 2026). A more casual spinoff of the iconic LA-based Katsuya, with shareable plates, robata grilling, and sushi. The spicy tuna crispy rice is the original that everyone else has been copying for years.
  • Marugame Udon — Watch them hand-pull udon noodles right in front of you, cafeteria-style. Fast, fresh, and very affordable.
  • Din Tai Fung — The legendary soup dumplings. Expect a wait, especially on weekends. It’s worth it.
  • 85°C Bakery Café — Taiwanese bakery with incredibly affordable pastries and sea salt coffee. Great stop with kids.

Sit-down restaurants and date nights:

  • True Food Kitchen — Health-forward menu on one of the nicest patios at the mall.
  • Queenstown Bistro — Burgers and a glass of wine at an outdoor table. Reliably good.
  • Javier’s — Upscale Mexican. Beautiful space and strong margaritas. Beware, it’s loud and buzzy.
  • Lucrezia — Italian fine dining in the former Larsen’s space.
  • The Winery Restaurant — Impressive wine list and polished service.
  • Raised by Wolves — A speakeasy hidden behind a fireplace inside what looks like a bottle shop. The entrance alone is worth the visit.

The restaurant lineup changes regularly, so check the full Westfield UTC restaurant list for what’s currently open.

For Families

Playground climbing structure near Macy's.

Westfield UTC goes above and beyond for families, which is one of the reasons it’s on my list of things to do in La Jolla with kids.

Splash pad: Near Macy’s, the pop-jet fountain splash pad is a magnet for kids on a sunny day. Fair warning that your children will want to run through it, so plan accordingly. Bring a change of clothes or a towel. Outdoor family showers and a family restroom are right next to it.

Playground: The Westfield Play Space, adjacent to the splash pad, features a sea-themed play structure that kids love. I know families who come to the mall specifically for this. Between the splash pad and the playground, you can easily fill a couple of hours while another parent shops. There’s plenty of seating in this area for parents.

Family Lounge: Accessible from inside the food court, the Family Lounge is a quiet space with nursing stations, changing tables, and toys. It’s a great spot to take a break and feed a baby.

Gyminny Kids: This gymnastics center took over the former G3Kids space and opened in late 2025. They offer classes for ages 9 months and up. What makes it relevant for shoppers is the open gym sessions and Kids Night Out/Day Out clinics. These are structured three-hour blocks where kids play games, do gymnastics, and participate in group activities while you shop or have dinner. Open gym sessions run multiple times per week (Tuesdays through Sundays) and cost $25 per hour. Check the Gyminny Kids La Jolla page for the current schedule.

Movies: AMC UTC 14 is a full-service movie theater with an onsite bar, restaurant, and in-theater dining. Great for a rainy day or when the kids need some downtime.

Ice skating: UTC Ice Sports Center is a full-size indoor rink downstairs from the Dining Terrace. Public skating sessions run daily and tend to be long, up to several hours, with in-and-out privileges so you can skate, grab lunch upstairs, and come back. Rental skates and helmets are available. They also have free intro lessons on Saturdays, hockey leagues, figure skating classes, and birthday parties.

For little ones who can’t quite stand up yet, you can rent seal-shaped push sleds. It’s one of the few ice rinks in San Diego, and it’s a great place to go on a rainy day or a hot afternoon. We have been here a lot.

Dog-Friendly

It’s common to see leashed dogs at Westfield UTC, and the mall is genuinely welcoming to four-legged visitors. Beyond walking the promenades, you can stop by the fenced, off-leash Bark Park dog park near the Dining Terrace. Look for Tender Greens and walk downhill to reach it.

Be mindful that not all retailers allow dogs inside, and dogs other than service animals aren’t permitted in the food court or restaurants. But plenty of the outdoor seating areas are fair game for well-behaved pups.

Good to Know

The concierge kiosk

Concierge: A concierge kiosk in Palm Court can help you find stores, pick out gifts, or navigate the mall. For questions, call the management office at (858) 546-8858 or email utc@urw.com.

Phone charging: chargeFUZE portable charging stations are in the Dining Terrace and near Marugame Udon. Grab a charger, use it to shop, and return it when you’re done.

Art: The mall features an ongoing art program with installations and sculptures throughout the property, including in some unexpected spots like bathroom hallways and fountains. Many pieces are by San Diego artists. Keep an eye out as you walk around — there’s more than you’d expect.

Fire pits: Lounge areas with fire pits are sprinkled throughout the mall. On a cool evening, they’re one of the nicest spots in San Diego to sit with a drink.

Entertainment: Beyond shopping and dining, the mall is home to 24 Hour Fitness, UTC Ice Sports Center, and AMC UTC 14.

Lost and found: If you leave something behind, head back to the store or restaurant first. If you’re not sure where you left it, find a security guard or the concierge desk, and they’ll connect you with the central lost and found.
