Pendry San Diego Hotel Review: Which Room to Book and How to Get VIP Benefits

Not every traveler should book Pendry San Diego. Here is who it suits, what the rooftop pool is like on a summer weekend, and how parking and the amenity fee work.

Pendry San Diego hotel pool in downtown

Pendry San Diego consistently ranks among the top San Diego luxury hotels and is one of my favorite picks for downtown San Diego hotels.

I love that it’s located in a prime spot at the southern tip of the Gaslamp Quarter, a short walk from a Padres game, the San Diego Convention Center, vibrant nightlife, and some of the city’s best restaurants.

You can expect to have a swanky, cosmopolitan experience with impeccable service at the posh 12-story boutique hotel. Premium amenities include a rooftop pool, a full-service spa, and five onsite restaurants and bars.

I’ll share everything you need to know before booking in, including how to secure VIP benefits. My full review is below.

Who Pendry San Diego Is For (and Who It Isn’t)

Most Pendry San Diego reviews cover a single stay. Mine covers my own stays and the clients I have booked here as a travel advisor, more than I can count. That is why it focuses on how to book for the most value (usually through Virtuoso), which room to choose, and what the hotel is good at.

It fits a specific traveler. It is for people who want a luxury hotel within walking distance of Petco Park, the Convention Center, and the Gaslamp’s restaurants.

It suits couples, business travelers, and families who like boutique hotels and need connecting rooms. It is a strong choice for a Padres weekend or a convention, because Petco Park and the Convention Center are both a short walk.

Pendry San Diego Hotel Lobby
Pendry San Diego Lobby

It is not the right hotel if you want a resort pool. The pool is small and hosts pool parties on summer weekends. Families who want to spend the trip in the water should look at Park Hyatt Aviara or a beach property instead.

It is also not the hotel for a quiet, sleepy stay. This is the middle of the Gaslamp, and weekend nights sound like it.

What I Love

  • Rooftop swimming pool with cabanas, a whirlpool, a bar, and city views
  • Five restaurants and bars on site, so you can eat well without leaving the building
  • Enviable Gaslamp Quarter location (three blocks to the Convention Center, two blocks to Petco Park)
  • The Cadillac Ride & Drive program, covered by the amenity fee
  • Moët & Chandon champagne vending machine near Provisional
  • Spa Pendry’s full-service treatments (I had a GREAT massage)
  • Strollers, skateboards, and Taylor guitars you can borrow, included in the amenity fee
  • Value-added Virtuoso amenities when you book through me

Good to Know

  • It can be kid-friendly (read my tips below), but the pool is not on summer weekends due to pool parties and club-like events
  • Standard rooms are about 350 square feet with glass showers and no bathtub. Bathtubs are only in some suites
  • There are no sofa beds. A king room sleeps three with a rollaway, so for four, book a two-queen room or a two-bedroom suite
  • Light sleepers should request upper floors, because downtown San Diego hotels pick up street noise on lower ones
  • Adjoining rooms are available, and guaranteed for Virtuoso guests
  • One dog per room, no cats, for an additional fee
  • Make dining reservations, even for breakfast, on weekends
  • Valet parking only, and the property is cashless, so bring your own tipping cash

Which Room to Book at Pendry San Diego

The 317 guestrooms and suites at Pendry San Diego all share an upscale urban flair, with a California coastal design, custom furniture, and vintage accessories.

Every standard room is about 350 square feet, which is average for an urban hotel, so you choose by floor and view rather than size. All five standard categories come with a king bed, and City and Skyline rooms also come with two queens. The king rooms add a chic plaid chaise lounge.

Five categories come in ADA-accessible versions: the City King, City Queen Queen, Pool King, Bay King, and the Corner One Bedroom Suite, which has a roll-in shower.

My short answer:

  • A view of the water: Bay King, our top pick when people want to see the bay
  • A family that wants two rooms: a Deluxe One Bedroom Suite connected to a City Queen Queen, the arrangement I highly recommend
  • The lowest rate: City King or City Queen Queen, the rooms booked most
  • A private cabana on the pool deck: the Pool Suite

Insider Tips · The Showers and the Minibar

The showers. Let’s talk about the glass showers! Yes, they’re big and fantastic. Maybe not the best for friends, but a curtain covers them up, and you can see it in my video below.

The minibar. The minibar is on sensors, so moving an item can trigger a charge. Ask the front desk to empty the fridge at check-in if you want the space for your own things.

City King or Two Queens

Most Booked

Sleeps three in the king with a rollaway, or four across two queens. City Rooms are on floors 2 through 8 and do not overlook the city as fully as the Skyline or Bay View rooms do. However, I was recently in a City View room on Floor 6, and it had a cool view of the activity on J Street. Some connect to a City Queen Queen, a Deluxe One Bedroom Suite, or a Studio Suite. It is the least expensive room, so it is booked most. It is not the best fit for everyone.

Pool King

Sleeps three in the king with a rollaway. Rooms on the 5th Avenue side look at the hotel’s rooftop pool and the city. Rooms on the 6th Avenue side look at the Petco Park sign and the city. The pool side faces the deck where the summer pool parties happen. Some connect to a Corner or Deluxe One Bedroom Suite.

Corner King

Sleeps three in the king with a rollaway. See 180-degree views of San Diego through the windows of your Corner King room. It is the same size as the other standard rooms.

Bay King

Sleeps three in the king with a rollaway, on floors 8 through 12. A Bay Room is located on the 5th Avenue side with distant views of the bay. These are typically on higher floors and our top pick for rooms when people want to see water. Some connect to a Bay One Bedroom Suite.

Skyline King or Two Queens

Sleeps three in the king with a rollaway, or four across two queens. Book yourself on an even higher floor with skyline views of the downtown area. This is best for views and for escaping street noise. The two-queen version connects to a Bay One Bedroom Suite or a Skyline King.

Insider Tips · Getting a Quiet Room

Every downtown hotel has some street noise from cars and activity. Book high floors to help escape this.

Suites at Pendry San Diego

I recently stayed in a Deluxe One Bedroom Suite connected to a City Queen Queen and highly recommend that arrangement to families.

  • Pendry San Diego Executive Suite
    Studio Suite
  • Pendry San Diego Grand One Bedroom Suite Living Room
Bay One Bedroom Suite living room
  • Pendry San Diego Corner Suite
    Corner One Bedroom Suite
  • Pendry San Diego Pendry Suite
    The Pendry Suite
  • Pendry San Diego Pool Cabana Suite
Pool Suite, with its private cabana on the pool deck

Studio Suite

Sleeps three with a rollaway. For a larger room and even sweeter view of the city, look into this kind of suite. The open studio offers 621 square feet, with a sitting area, a king bed, a wet bar, and a bathroom with a soaking tub and a dual-sink vanity. Some connect to a City King. Older listings call it an Executive Suite.

Deluxe One Bedroom Suite

Sleeps three with a rollaway. With 709 square feet, these one-bedroom suites have a separate living room with a four-seat dining area and a wet bar, plus a king bed and a bathroom with a dual-head shower. It can connect to a City Queen Queen.

Bay One Bedroom Suite

Sleeps three with a rollaway. One of the best views in the hotel belongs to the Bay One Bedroom Suite. It’s 709 square feet with a fully separate sitting area, a dining table for four, and a wet bar, on higher floors than the Deluxe. Some connect to a Bay King or a Skyline Queen Queen.

Corner One Bedroom Suite

Sleeps three with a rollaway. The Corner One Bedroom Suite is another prime spot if you want more space and an impressive city view, with 709 square feet, separate bedroom and living spaces, and 180-degree views of the San Diego skyline. Some connect to a Pool King.

Two Bedroom Suites

Sleep five to seven depending on the layout, each with one rollaway. The hotel sells six two-bedroom layouts. The two-king layouts suit two couples, because each pair gets its own bedroom. The king plus two-queens layouts are the family rooms, and the Bay Two Bedroom King/Queen sleeps seven. Ask me and I will price one against two separate rooms for your dates.

The Pendry Suite

Sleeps up to eight using two rollaways. The two-bedroom Pendry Suite is the hotel’s largest, with one king and two queens across two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a wet bar, a Peloton bike, and a soaking tub. The parents take the king and the kids get the queens, which makes it a family suite. A one-bedroom version, at 1,497 square feet, sleeps four.

Pool Suite

Sleeps four using two rollaways. If you plan to spend lots of time at the pool, this 1,082-square-foot suite is the one. Its private terrace opens onto the pool deck, with a 220-square-foot cabana of your own, plus a separate bedroom, a dining table for six, a wet bar, and a soaking tub. It is the wrong room for anyone hoping for a quiet weekend in summer.

Back to how to book with Virtuoso benefits.

The Rooftop Pool at Pendry San Diego

The pool at Pendry San Diego

At Pendry San Diego, they go all out regarding rooftop entertainment. The centerpiece is a beautiful outdoor pool and whirlpool surrounded by plush chaise lounges, with private cabanas along one wall of the patio. The pool is not large, and it can feel a little crowded with only a few people.

The pool is on the third floor. Hotel guests can reserve a cabana or daybed any day, and the public can reserve them Monday through Thursday.

The Pool House restaurant opens onto the patio and provides casual fare and cocktails that can be enjoyed poolside, in a cabana, or in the al fresco dining area. The pool is also on my list of best hotel pools in San Diego.

Insider Tips · Pool Scene

The pool area is not family-friendly during weekend pool parties and events. The public can rent cabanas here, so on weekends and peak dates the pool area is busy and can have a club-like scene.

If traveling in summer or over a holiday, slot in early morning pool time with kids to avoid the afternoon party-goers. The parties are seasonal, so check the Pool House’s events for your dates.

Spa Pendry and the 24-Hour Fitness Center

You are sure to relax when you check in. (I just had one of the best massages ever here.)

Spa Pendry inside Pendry San Diego hotel

Spa Pendry sits next to the pool deck, with a full menu of massages, facials, body treatments, and couples experiences, plus indoor and outdoor treatment options. There are separate facilities for men and women, including a eucalyptus steam room and a relaxation room. Spa guests must be 16 or older.

Spa guests who are not staying at the hotel get day use of the pool and the fitness center with their treatment, subject to availability. The fitness center is next door, open 24 hours, and overlooks the pool, with Technogym cardio equipment, Peloton bikes, and free weights.

Pendry San Diego for Kids

One of the most frequently asked questions I receive is whether Pendry San Diego is a kid-friendly hotel in San Diego. While you won’t see many kids running around, families who usually stay in upscale boutique properties love it.

If you need connecting rooms, this is one San Diego hotel that can make it happen for Virtuoso guests (at many hotels, it’s a request but not a guarantee). So, I recommend it to boutique hotel-loving families who need this and are okay with the pool scene.

Our Favorite · Kids Amenities

  • UPPAbaby stroller rentals
  • Taylor guitars
  • Sector 9 skateboards
  • Games at Nason’s Beer Hall

The first three are covered by the amenity fee and reserved through the concierge, so there is no extra charge.

Nason’s Beer Hall has kid-friendly games, such as shuffleboard, a Pac-Man video game, cornhole, Jenga, and Connect Four, and its outdoor patio is fenced to keep active kids secure. Kids won’t have any issues dining throughout the hotel, as the restaurants can accommodate special requests.

If traveling with a baby, choose a suite with a bathtub if this is important to you, because rooms have only the giant glass showers. Cribs are complimentary, and rollaway beds cost extra per night. Four guests fit in a two-queen room or a two-bedroom suite.

Pendry San Diego Restaurants

This is where the hotel sets itself apart from the rest. You’ll find five onsite restaurants and bars at the Pendry Hotel in San Diego, each offering a different vibe and menu, plus 24-hour in-room dining.

Insider Tips · Booking a Table

Make dining reservations, even for breakfast, during weekends and holidays. These dining outlets are popular because they are so good.

Provisional

Provisional Kitchen at Pendry San Diego

Provisional Kitchen, Cafe, and Mercantile is a magical space that incorporates a casual restaurant, a boutique, and a coffeehouse in one, on the ground floor, Fifth Avenue side of the hotel.

It is the hotel’s daytime dining room, open for breakfast, brunch, and lunch but not dinner. There is a kids’ menu, a sidewalk patio, and a retail corner of ceramics, housewares, pantry items, and jewelry.

Virtuoso guests use their daily breakfast credit here or through in-room dining.

Pendry San Diego Moët & Chandon champagne vending machine

A special treat is the Moët & Chandon champagne vending machine in the hallway to Provisional, where hotel guests can get single-serving bottles on demand. The machine only accepts Moët-branded coins you purchase from the front desk, and it dispenses gently, so you don’t have to worry about disturbing the bubbles.

Lionfish

Lionfish Restaurant at Pendry San Diego hotel

Lionfish is the hotel’s signature fine dining restaurant, serving modern coastal cuisine, daily fresh catch, and sushi in an upscale two-story space next door to Provisional. Get the ahi tuna flight. All of the nigiri and sushi and everything I’ve had at Lionfish is great!

The Pool House

The Pool House at Pendry San Diego

The Pool House is the rooftop bar and restaurant that opens onto the pool. Eat at the bar, in a private cabana, on your poolside chaise lounge, or at the al fresco dining area at one end of the rooftop. The menu is light bites, sandwiches, salads, and sides.

Nason’s Beer Hall

Nason's at Pendry San Diego

Nason’s Beer Hall is a modern take on the American sports bar, on the street level at the corner of J Street and Sixth Avenue, steps from Petco Park.

Expect a long list of local beers on tap, a simple menu of shareable plates and sandwiches, a popcorn cart, bar games, and lots of TVs. Folding glass doors open onto a sidewalk patio.

Fifth & Rose

Fifth & Rose at Pendry San Diego

Fifth & Rose is Pendry San Diego’s sophisticated cocktail bar just off the lobby at the corner of J Street and Fifth Avenue. This is the place for a nightcap and conversation after a night out on the town. Or, if you’re like me, maybe a place to take your laptop down to for a quiet glass of wine and truffle fries.

The Downtown Neighborhood and Map

Pendry San Diego sits right where the Gaslamp Quarter meets East Village, at the corner of J Street and Fifth Avenue. Petco Park is a four-minute walk and the Convention Center is seven minutes, by the hotel’s own count. The airport is about four miles away, roughly a 12-minute drive.

The Gaslamp side feels historic and lively, while East Village across Sixth Avenue is more modern and open. Both are worth exploring, and there are plenty of fun things to do in downtown San Diego within a few blocks.

Grab your pre-game eats at Nason’s Beer Hall on the hotel’s Sixth Avenue side before the short walk to a Padres game. Or watch from Gallagher Square, the park outside the outfield fence with a playground.

You can walk to the Embarcadero easily from Pendry San Diego, where the USS Midway Museum is located and where many of San Diego’s harbor cruises depart. You’ll pass the San Diego Convention Center and Seaport Village along the way.

The Cadillac Ride & Drive Program

Thanks to Pendry’s partnership with Cadillac, you can reserve a ride or drive yourself around town. The hotel calls Cadillac its official vehicle, and the Ride & Drive program lets guests take the automaker’s newest cars out on the open road during their stay.

The program is covered by the amenity fee, so there is nothing extra to pay. Ask the concierge about availability when you arrive.

Pendry San Diego Policies: Parking, Pets, and the Amenity Fee

Pool House at Pendry San Diego

Here are some need-to-know logistics for staying at Pendry San Diego. The hotel provides adjoining rooms by request (unless you are a Virtuoso guest through me, in which case they are guaranteed). The property is also entirely cashless, so bring small bills if you like to tip housekeeping and the valet.

Pendry San Diego Parking

There is no self-parking at Pendry San Diego. Valet is the only option, one registered vehicle per guestroom, with in-and-out privileges, and EV charging is available for a nightly fee. Parking downtown is pricey, so you may save if you can go carless.

If you are driving in, the public garages around the hotel cost less than the valet, and you can book a space ahead through SpotHero. Read the lot’s terms for in-and-out before you book one, and plan on walking your luggage a few blocks on arrival.

Pendry San Diego Pet Policy

Pendry San Diego’s pet policy is pretty liberal. You can bring one dog (no cats!) per room for a fee charged per stay rather than per night. You don’t even need to tell them in advance, but you should, because they have nifty pet accessories and treats they can prepare for him or her.

Every room and suite category is pet friendly. Because of health code, dogs are not allowed indoors anywhere food and drink are served, so plan on the sidewalk patios at Provisional or Nason’s.

The Amenity Fee

Every room and suite carries a nightly amenity fee on top of the room rate. It is worth reading what it covers, because several things people assume cost extra are inside it.

  • Wi-Fi and the in-room espresso machine
  • Morning coffee and tea at Provisional
  • The fitness center
  • The Cadillac Ride & Drive program
  • The UPPAbaby stroller, Sector 9 skateboard, and Taylor guitar programs
  • Pet amenities and children’s amenities

The hotel keeps the current list on its FAQ page, which is the version to trust.

FAQs About Staying at Pendry San Diego

Is Pendry San Diego worth it?

For a downtown San Diego stay, yes, provided you want what Pendry San Diego is good at: the Gaslamp Quarter location, the service, the dining, and the spa. Go in knowing the pool is small and busy on summer weekends. Booking through Virtuoso adds a daily breakfast credit for two, a hotel credit, and an upgrade on arrival, subject to availability.

What is the best room at Pendry San Diego?

Every standard room is about 350 square feet, so you pick by floor and view. The Bay King on floors 8 through 12 is our top pick when people want to see water. For families, a Deluxe One Bedroom Suite connected to a City Queen Queen is the arrangement I highly recommend, and connecting rooms are guaranteed for Virtuoso guests.

How much is parking at Pendry San Diego?

Valet is the only parking, charged nightly for one vehicle per guestroom with in-and-out privileges, and EV charging costs extra. Rates change, so confirm them when you book. Public garages nearby cost less and can be reserved ahead through SpotHero.

Is Pendry San Diego pet friendly?

Yes, for dogs. One dog per room, no cats, for a fee charged per stay. Every room category is pet friendly, the hotel provides bowls, beds, and treats, and dogs are not permitted indoors where food and drink are served.

Is Pendry San Diego good for families?

It can be, with planning. Cribs are complimentary, connecting rooms are guaranteed for Virtuoso guests, and strollers, skateboards, and guitars are included in the amenity fee. A king room sleeps three with a rollaway, so a family of four wants two queens or a two-bedroom suite. The pool hosts parties on summer weekends, so swim in the morning.

How far is Pendry San Diego from Petco Park and the Convention Center?

Petco Park is 0.2 miles, about a four-minute walk. The San Diego Convention Center is 0.3 miles, about a seven-minute walk. San Diego International Airport is about four miles, a 12-minute drive by the hotel’s estimate.

What are check-in and check-out times at Pendry San Diego?

Check-in is 4 p.m. and check-out is noon. Early check-in depends on availability, and late check-out is available for a fee, also subject to availability. Virtuoso guests get early check-in and late check-out when available at no charge.

Can non-guests use the pool at Pendry San Diego?

The pool is for hotel guests, with two exceptions. The public can reserve a cabana or daybed Monday through Thursday, and spa guests get day use of the pool and fitness center with a treatment, subject to availability.

Is there a nightclub at Pendry San Diego?

No. The hotel’s venues today are the five restaurants and bars above, and the Gaslamp outside is as lively as ever on weekend nights.
