La HOY-ah. The double L works like a Y in Spanish. Locals will know what you mean either way, but if you're giving an address over the phone, spell it out.
What does La Jolla mean?
Most people will tell you it means 'the jewel' in Spanish, which fits, though the actual Spanish word for jewel is joya. Nobody knows for certain, and I find that fitting.
