Many people we work with on San Diego itineraries ask for hotels near San Diego Zoo. This makes sense because it’s our top attraction and a primary reason for visiting. However, choosing a hotel based only on proximity to the Zoo can be tricky.

There are no hotels within a short walking distance to the San Diego Zoo. The closest hotels on this list are about 1.6 miles away, which is a 30-minute walk mostly uphill through Balboa Park. The good news is that driving is easy thanks to the Zoo’s large parking lot (now paid), and Uber rides from downtown take under 15 minutes.

The Downtown, Little Italy, North Park, Hillcrest, and Bankers Hill neighborhoods all surround Balboa Park, where the San Diego Zoo is located. This means my picks span different neighborhoods and styles — luxury to budget, couples to large families. As a travel advisor and San Diego local, I’ve stayed at, visited, or booked clients into every hotel on this list.

The Pendry San Diego hotel pool surrounded by lounge chairs on a sunny day.

Pendry San Diego is a top downtown San Diego hotel for luxury travelers and one of the best hotels near San Diego Zoo if you want an upscale home base. Its specialty is blending modern with historic throughout the property — from the rooms to Lionfish (the signature farm-to-table restaurant), Provisional Kitchen & Bar, Nason’s Beer Hall, and the Fifth & Rose rooftop lounge.

The 317 rooms include 36 suites with posh linens and stylish decor. I love the excellent service and Gaslamp Quarter location, within walking distance of dozens of bars and restaurants, plus the San Diego Convention Center and Petco Park. Pendry is part of Montage International.

Standard rooms have walk-in rain showers (no bathtubs), while suites add deep soak tubs and sofa beds in the living area. All rooms come with MiN New York bath amenities, fully stocked mini-bars, and 50-inch TVs. The rooftop pool has cabanas and poolside service. Valet parking is $70 per night; there is no self-parking.

Good to know: All downtown hotels pick up some street noise, so request a higher floor or a quiet-side room. The pool area leans adult-centric on weekends, especially when pool parties are on the calendar — not ideal for families with small children during peak times. Connecting rooms are available (king to two-queen in the same view type).
Rates: From ~$350/night · Parking: Valet $70/night · Breakfast: Included with Virtuoso · Pool: Rooftop

The US GRANT, a Luxury Collection Hotel San Diego King room interior.

THE US GRANT is one of two luxury hotels near San Diego Zoo on this list, located across from Horton Plaza Park and within walking distance to many of San Diego’s best restaurants. It’s close enough to the downtown buzz yet far enough away so that noise and chaos aren’t so much of an issue.

This downtown San Diego hotel has a fascinating history spanning more than a century. More than a dozen U.S. presidents and countless celebrities have stayed here since it opened in 1910. It was also a speakeasy and a place where women’s rights were won. After careful restoration to modernize while preserving historic features, THE US GRANT is better than ever.

The hotel has 270 rooms including 47 suites ranging from 400 to 750 square feet, with separate living rooms in the larger suites. The Grant Grill has been a San Diego dining institution since the 1950s. Connecting rooms are also available for families.

Virtuoso Amenities We Can Add
  • Upgrade on arrival, subject to availability
  • Full breakfast daily for up to two in-room guests at The Grant Grill or via room service (up to $60 per day)
  • $100 USD food & beverage credit during stay (Grant Grill or room service)
  • Early check-in / late check-out, subject to availability
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi
These perks are added at no extra cost when you book through us. Because THE US GRANT is a Marriott Luxury Collection property, you still earn Marriott Bonvoy points on Virtuoso bookings.
Good to know: There is no swimming pool or full-service spa, though spa treatments (massages, facials, body treatments) can be arranged in the Spa Suite. Pets up to 35 lbs are welcome ($150 non-refundable fee). If you need a bathtub, specifically request the Grand Deluxe Tub room — standard rooms have showers only. Self-parking and valet parking are both available.

The old bank vault turned conference room at Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Downtown.

The Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Downtown is located in the former San Diego Trust & Savings Bank building dating from 1928 — one of the conference rooms is behind the original 47,000-pound Mosler bank vault door. The 14-story building was designed by William Templeton Johnson in the Italian Romanesque Revival style, and the conversion to a hotel preserved the historic details beautifully.

The result is a blend of historic and modern that feels more elevated than a typical Courtyard. Gold Reserve Kitchen and Bar serves California cuisine with daily happy hour, and there’s an on-site Starbucks. Restaurants and nightlife are just a couple blocks away at the northern edge of the Gaslamp Quarter, and the trolley stop is one block away.

They have one-bedroom suites that are typically reasonably priced, making this a solid value pick for families.

Good to know: Valet parking only — no self-parking (approximately $70/day). There is no pool. Rooms near the street side can pick up nightlife noise, especially on weekends near Petco Park. Promotions are listed under the hotel website’s deals tab.
Rates: From ~$200/night · Parking: Valet ~$70/day · Breakfast: Not included · Pool: None

Located in the popular Little Italy neighborhood, Porto Vista Hotel is a family-owned boutique hotel with 190 mid-century style guest rooms and an art collection throughout the property. The GlassDoor Restaurant on the fourth floor serves Mexican cuisine with panoramic views of San Diego Harbor — it’s a great spot for happy hour.

The shops and restaurants of Little Italy are right outside your door, including the Saturday Mercato farmers market, one of the best in San Diego. It’s a fantastic choice for people who want a nice, reasonably-priced hotel near San Diego Zoo in a walkable location that isn’t part of a chain.

The rooftop has a small heated “spool” (spa/pool combination) with views. Dogs up to 40 lbs are welcome ($60/pet/day, max 2 pets).

Good to know: Breakfast at GlassDoor is available but not complimentary ($19 adults, $15 children). Porto Vista’s complimentary shuttle service (airport, convention center, cruise terminal) is currently suspended — plan on a rideshare or rental car. Rooms are on the smaller side. No rollaway beds or cribs available.
Rates: From ~$170/night · Parking: On-site (fee) · Breakfast: Paid ($19/$15) · Pool: Rooftop spool

The famous Weissmuller Olympic Pool at Lafayette Hotel in San Diego.

The Lafayette is a historic San Diego boutique hotel in the North Park neighborhood near Balboa Park that opened in 1946. At the heart of the hotel is the Weissmuller Olympic Pool, designed by Johnny Weissmuller — former Tarzan star and five-time Olympic gold medalist. Do plan time to unwind at the pool.

Speaking of Hollywood, the “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” bar scene in Top Gun was filmed here, and early guests included Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, and Bing Crosby. The hotel completed a $31 million renovation and earned a Michelin Key in 2025.

Today you’ll find Beginner’s Diner (open 24 hours), an Oaxacan-inspired Mezcalería with a really nice food menu, Lou Lou’s Jungle Room for live music, and The Gutter — a two-lane bowling alley. Each of the 141 rooms is named after a film star. Unlike most hotels on this list, this one is NOT in downtown San Diego. North Park is well-known for some of San Diego’s best casual restaurants and cool shops.

Good to know: The pool can be crowded on weekends. Since the renovation, the hotel is more adult-centric — better for couples and friends than families with small children. Dogs up to 45 lbs are welcome ($100 per stay; no cats, pets cannot be left unattended). Parking is available for a fee.
Rates: From ~$250/night · Parking: On-site (fee) · Breakfast: Not included · Pool: Olympic-sized

Hilton Garden Inn Bayside pool with view of San Diego Bay.

The Hilton Garden Inn San Diego Downtown/Bayside is within walking distance to Little Italy, Downtown San Diego, and San Diego Bay, with quick access to nearby San Diego International Airport as well. Since Hilton hotels in San Diego are incredibly popular with families, and this one has in-room microwaves and mini-refrigerators, it’s a practical option with a great location.

The heated rooftop pool with panoramic city and bay views is genuinely impressive, especially at sunset. Bayside Kitchen + Bar serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner on-site. Hilton Digital Key lets you bypass the front desk, and cribs are available.

It’s not the closest hotel to the San Diego Zoo on this list, but it’s a solid choice for families who want to walk to Little Italy for dinner and have the conveniences that a Hilton Garden Inn reliably delivers. Connecting rooms are available.

Good to know: No self-parking — valet only ($60/night). The 24-hour Pavilion Pantry Market has snacks and essentials if you arrive late. Coin-operated laundry on-site is a real perk for families on longer trips.
Rates: From ~$220/night · Parking: Valet $60/night · Breakfast: Not included · Pool: Heated rooftop

Marriott Vacation Club Pulse San Diego suite with kitchenette for large families.

The Marriott Vacation Club Pulse is a 264-room hotel in downtown San Diego, adjacent to Symphony Hall and a few blocks from the Historic Gaslamp Quarter. It’s popular with larger families because every room has a kitchenette with a microwave, mini-refrigerator, sink, silverware, and dishes — which can save you a significant amount on meals, especially with kids.

Suites were renovated in 2023 and include one-bedroom king suites (sleeps 4), one-bedroom double suites with sofa beds (sleeps 6), and two-bedroom suites. SHAKE is the on-site cocktail bar and lounge. The indoor pool is a plus for families visiting on cooler days.

If you’re looking for a hotel near San Diego Zoo that can comfortably accommodate a bigger group with the comforts of home, this is your best bet on the list.

Good to know: No pets. Self-parking is available ($42/day) but the garage has a very narrow corkscrew ramp up to level 11 with 7’2″ clearance — not suitable for large SUVs or minivans. Valet ($55/night) avoids that problem. No on-site fitness center, but guests can use a nearby gym at a discounted rate.
Rates: From ~$180/night · Parking: Self $42 / Valet $55 · Breakfast: Not included · Pool: Indoor

King room interior at Best Western San Diego Downtown.

The Best Western San Diego Downtown (formerly Cabrillo Garden Inn) is a small 30-room hotel in downtown San Diego and one of the two closest hotels to the San Diego Zoo on this list at just 1.6 miles. It gets consistently great reviews for being friendly, clean, and comfortable, with more character than other budget hotels.

You may read reviews from people who say you can walk to the Zoo from here — and you technically can — but it’s about a 30-minute walk, mostly uphill through Balboa Park. The shops and restaurants of the Gaslamp Quarter are a 10-15 minute walk away.

This is a no-frills hotel, but it’s well-reviewed and in a great location for the Zoo at a price that’s hard to beat in San Diego.

Good to know: Free continental breakfast and free WiFi are included. In-room refrigerators and coffee/tea makers in every room. Parking is available for a nightly fee that is lower than most downtown San Diego hotels (~$20/night). No pets allowed. Adjoining rooms are available. The hotel has a rooftop terrace. No pool.
Rates: From ~$130/night · Parking: On-site ~$20/night · Breakfast: Included · Pool: None

Street view of Holiday Inn Express Downtown, one of the best budget hotels near San Diego Zoo.

This Holiday Inn Express sits in downtown San Diego with easy access to Balboa Park. You can walk to the park’s boundary in about seven minutes, though reaching the Zoo entrance on foot takes closer to 30 minutes. Most guests drive or rideshare.

It’s a reliable budget hotel near San Diego Zoo that consistently gets solid reviews for cleanliness and the included hot breakfast. The location isn’t the most charming stretch of downtown, but it’s well-connected, and the gated on-site self-parking is a real advantage when most downtown hotels offer valet only.

The outdoor pool with downtown skyline views is a nice bonus at this price point. Mini-fridges are in every room, and the IHG app lets you choose your room in advance.

Good to know: Gated on-site self-parking is available ($38/day) — a real perk downtown. Some rooms pick up street noise, so request a higher floor if you’re a light sleeper. The hotel may offer a complimentary shuttle to the airport and nearby attractions — confirm when booking. Joining IHG One Rewards (free) gets you a slight rate discount and lets you earn points toward free nights. Free cribs available for infants.
Rates: From ~$150/night · Parking: Self $38/day · Breakfast: Included (hot buffet) · Pool: Outdoor

Inn at the Park is a registered historic building in the Bankers Hill neighborhood, right across the street from Balboa Park. It offers studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom suites, each with a fully equipped kitchen including an apartment-sized refrigerator and stove — not just a kitchenette. If you want to save on dining during a longer stay, this is the hotel to book.

Bankers Hill is adjacent to Hillcrest, another San Diego neighborhood well-known for outstanding casual dining. You can technically walk to the Zoo from here, though it’s about 30 minutes. The full kitchens make this one of the best hotels near San Diego Zoo for families who need to prepare bottles, snacks, or meals for picky eaters.

Good to know: This is a timeshare property (managed by Shell Hospitality, affiliated with Club Wyndham) that is also available to non-timeshare guests. Expect a timeshare sales presentation at check-in — you can decline, but be prepared for the pitch. There is an additional housekeeping fee for shorter stays. Valet parking is $30/night with in/out privileges, or you can try street parking, which is usually challenging in this area. The property was renovated in early 2025. No pool.
Rates: From ~$160/night + fees · Parking: Valet $30/night · Breakfast: Not included · Pool: None

FAQ

What is the closest hotel to the San Diego Zoo?

The Best Western San Diego Downtown and the Lafayette Hotel are both 1.6 miles from the Zoo, making them the closest hotels on this list. The Best Western is a 6-minute drive, while the Lafayette takes about 8 minutes due to routing. Inn at the Park in Bankers Hill is the next closest at 1.9 miles.

Can you walk to the San Diego Zoo from a hotel?

Technically yes, but expect a 30-minute walk from even the closest hotels. The route goes through Balboa Park and is mostly uphill. Most visitors drive (the Zoo has a large, free parking lot), take a rideshare, or use the Old Town Trolley to its Balboa Park stop. Walking is pleasant if you enjoy the park scenery and aren’t in a rush, but it’s not practical with small children or strollers.

Do hotels near the San Diego Zoo have pools?

Most do. Pendry San Diego has a rooftop pool (more adult-focused), Lafayette Hotel has a famous Olympic-sized pool, Hilton Garden Inn Bayside has a heated rooftop pool with bay views, Marriott Vacation Club Pulse has an indoor pool, and Holiday Inn Express has an outdoor pool with skyline views. The US Grant, Courtyard by Marriott, Best Western, and Inn at the Park do not have pools. Porto Vista has a small rooftop “spool” (spa/pool combination).

Are there hotels near San Diego Zoo Safari Park?

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is a completely separate attraction located in Escondido, about 35 miles north of downtown San Diego. The hotels on this page are near the San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park, not the Safari Park. For Safari Park hotels, see my guide to the best hotels near San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

What are the best family hotels near the San Diego Zoo?

For large families (5+), the Marriott Vacation Club Pulse has suites with kitchenettes that can save significantly on meals. For families who want full kitchens, Inn at the Park has studio through two-bedroom suites with real stoves and refrigerators. Hilton Garden Inn Bayside is the best all-around family pick with in-room microwaves, cribs, connecting rooms, and a heated rooftop pool. For budget-conscious families, Holiday Inn Express offers free hot breakfast and an outdoor pool.
