Fairmont Grand Del Mar is one of my top recommendations for a five-star resort experience in Southern California. Set across 400 acres of protected canyon between La Jolla and Rancho Santa Fe, the resort gives guests a true luxury experience without committing to North County or downtown San Diego. It’s also home to a Forbes Five-Star spa, three-Michelin-star Addison, and is one of the few West Coast luxury resorts that welcomes families without compromising the adult experience.
I’ve stayed at the resort many times and book clients here all the time. I also live nearby, so I’m often on property for a spa day, lunch, or afternoon tea. That ongoing, firsthand familiarity shapes every recommendation in this review.
I know how to match the right room or suite to how you want to spend your time, who the resort is right for and who it isn’t, and that the VIP amenities you have access to through me genuinely add value to your stay.

What I Love
- Central East Del Mar location with easy freeway access
- Supervised year-round Explorer’s Club for ages 5 to 12
- Four pools including an adults-only Relaxation Pool
- Forbes Five-Star spa with the new Dryfloat Hydrotherapy Massage and a vibroacoustic recovery chair
- Three-Michelin-star dining at Addison
- Saturday morning naturalist-guided hikes through Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve
- Large accommodations starting at 500 sq ft, many with fireside patios
- Service from check-in to check-out is consistently excellent
Good to Know
- Inland canyon setting, not on the beach (about 15 minutes by car)
- Valet parking only
- Mediterranean estate feel, not sleek modern
- King rooms do not have sofa beds
- Steep fee for rollaway beds, but cribs are complimentary
- Complimentary house car scheduled with the concierge to nearby attractions (most clients use it for the beach)
Fairmont Grand Del Mar
VIP Virtuoso Amenities Included at No Extra Cost
- Daily breakfast for two at Amaya or in-room dining
- $100 resort credit per stay
- Room upgrade on arrival (subject to availability, excludes suites)
- Priority early check-in and late check-out
- VIP status

When searching for rates on Virtuoso, do not enter ages for children 17 and under, since the system prices them as adults. I am notified when you book and will add them when I confirm your reservation.
The Rooms
Which Fairmont Grand Del Mar Room or Suite to Book
The resort has 249 elegantly appointed guestrooms and suites. The Mediterranean design carries through every room: arched doorways, stately pillars, white French doors, dark-wood furnishings, and a navy, cream, taupe, and gold palette.
Every room includes a pillow-top bed with goose-down pillows, a flat-screen TV, a private bar and minibar, a large work desk, an in-room laptop safe, a Nespresso machine and tea kettle, complimentary Wi-Fi (included in the resort fee), and twice-daily housekeeping with evening turndown. Marble bathrooms have European deep soaking tubs, separate showers, dual vanities, wall-mounted TVs, Italian-woven cotton bathrobes, and custom bath products.

Feel free to email me as well. I can help you choose a room or suite quickly, and I know details you won’t find on the resort’s website.
Tip: Helpful Notes for Large Families
- Families of five can fit into the one-bedroom suites with a rollaway bed.
- The Del Mar Suite is especially popular because it’s a one-bedroom suite with two full bathrooms.
- We can guarantee connecting rooms at the time of booking (subject to availability).
- Several ways to create two- and three-bedroom configurations via connecting rooms and suites. Tell me your party size and I’ll map it.
Fairmont Resort View Rooms
500 to 550 square feet. King or two queens, on floors 1 and 3, with a patio or terrace overlooking Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve or the golf course. The base room category and a comfortable fit for a couple or two adults with one child.
Deluxe Resort View Rooms With Balcony or Fireside Patio

Around 550 square feet. Balcony versions are on floors 2 and 3 with views of the resort grounds or the Relaxation Pool. Fireside Patio rooms (formerly called Fire Pit Terrace) are on the ground floor with a furnished outdoor terrace and a private gas fire pit. King or two queens.
The fireside patios are one of our most-requested options for couples and families with one child. Sitting outside under the fire pit after dinner is a quiet luxury.
Signature Poolside Room (Adults Only)
First floor, 550 square feet, king bed, with an expansive private patio overlooking the adults-only Relaxation Pool and step-out access to the pool deck. These are now available with fire pits as well. I stayed in one during my last visit and loved the room, especially the direct access to the spa pool, which provides privacy and convenience.
Two things to flag: the bathroom has a shuttered interior window that opens to the bedroom, and these rooms are not pet-friendly.
Del Mar Suites
1,000 square feet, with separate living and sleeping areas, a king bed, and two full bathrooms via dual master en-suites. The parlor has a pull-out sofa sleeper, an antique coffee table, a large work desk, and a chair-and-ottoman reading nook. Most are on floors 2 and 3 with Relaxation Pool or grounds views. A few are on the ground floor with fireside patios.
This is the most popular suite we book for families, thanks to the separate bedroom and living room and the two full bathrooms. Rollaways fit tightly.
Vista Suites
1,100 square feet with the same separate-bedroom-and-living-room layout as the Del Mar Suite, but the living area is larger and includes a kitchenette, a six-person dining table (the Del Mar Suite doesn’t have one), a stone fireplace, a built-in bookshelf, and a pull-out sofa sleeper. Floors 1 (with fireside patios) and 3 (with balconies), both with golf course views.
The Vista is my personal favorite. The six-person dining table is great for room-service breakfasts and family meals in the suite. A rollaway fits, and the layout handles a family of five better than the Del Mar.
Paseo Suites
1,500 square feet with one, two, or three-bedroom configurations available, all overlooking the grounds. The living area has a stone fireplace, two built-in bookshelves, oversized brown leather chairs, and a pull-out sofa sleeper. An eight-person dining table connects to a small kitchenette, with two expanded terraces or balconies. Floors 2 and 3.
The two-queen-with-sofa-sleeper configuration sleeps up to six. We combine Paseo Suites with rooms to create two- or three-bedroom configurations, and connecting rooms can be guaranteed at the time of booking (subject to availability).

Grand Suites
2,840 square feet with two king beds, the largest suite on property, on floors 2 and 3. Only two of these suites exist. The living area has two couches, two cozy chairs, a stone fireplace, a study, four 65-inch LCD TVs, and a spacious balcony with its own stone fireplace. An eight-person dining table connects to a butler’s pantry and a powder room. Views span the resort grounds and the golf course.
Insider Tips · Rooms & Suites
The Vista Suite is my pick for families of five. Six-person dining table, separate living and sleeping rooms, fits a rollaway. The Del Mar Suite is tighter with a rollaway but has two full bathrooms.
Fireside Patio rooms are worth the upgrade. Ground-floor terraces with a private gas fire pit. Most-requested category outside of the suites. Also the easiest pick for travelers with dogs since you walk directly out to the grass.
Signature Poolside rooms are for adults. The patio opens onto the adults-only Relaxation Pool deck. Not pet-friendly, and the bathroom has a shuttered window that opens to the bedroom (a design quirk worth knowing).
King rooms have no sofa bed. If you need a sofa sleeper, you’re in a suite (Del Mar, Vista, Paseo).
Connecting rooms can be guaranteed at booking. Most resorts won’t commit. We can.
Fairmont Grand Del Mar Villas
The villas are private three-bedroom residences ranging from 3,950 to 5,000 square feet. Villa Sorrento (3,950 sq ft, single-story, sleeps 9) has two king bedrooms and one with two queens, a kitchenette, a fireplace, and an outdoor patio. Villa Brisa (4,500 sq ft, two-floor with personal elevator, sleeps 8) has three master bedrooms, four-and-one-half bathrooms, a full kitchen, and an expansive patio with outdoor dining table and grill. Villa Loggia (4,900 to 5,000 sq ft, two-floor with personal elevator, sleeps 8) has three master king bedrooms, 4.5 marble bathrooms, a full kitchen, and a media room.
Villas are the right choice for multigenerational trips, milestone celebrations, or anyone who wants a private residence with full hotel service. Ask me for current availability and pricing.
Dining
On-Site Restaurants and Lounges
The resort has six dining venues plus afternoon tea, poolside dining, and 24-hour in-room dining. You can easily eat well here all week without leaving the property.
Addison by William Bradley
These are photos from my recent dinner at Addison, and every single dish was outstanding. I’ve eaten at many Michelin-starred restaurants around the world, but this one ranks very highly among them.
Addison is San Diego’s only three-Michelin-star restaurant and Southern California’s only Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five-Diamond restaurant. Chef William Bradley’s ten-course tasting menu ($395 per person at last check) blends contemporary French technique with California ingredients. There is no à la carte menu, and wine pairings are extra. Dietary restrictions are collected when you reserve.
I’ve eaten at many Michelin-starred restaurants around the world, and Addison ranks very highly among them. Book months ahead. If it’s booked, it’s booked, and even the resort concierge can’t always wedge guests in at the last minute.
Amaya
Italian-inspired all-day dining with seasonal California ingredients. Indoor dining room or a flower-lined terrace overlooking the canyon preserve. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and à la carte weekend brunch.
Children 5 and under eat free from the kids’ menu when ordering with a registered adult guest. Children 6 to 12 receive a 50% discount on the regular menu under the same conditions. It’s one of the most generous family dining programs at any San Diego luxury resort.

Grand Social
Grand Social is the resort’s outdoor evening venue: wood-fired food, cocktails, bocce on the upper level, and a newer lawn with cabanas and fire pits below. It has a garden-party feel with live music on some nights. Note that it’s seasonal, open Friday and Saturday evenings during the summer.
The Clubhouse Grill
Casual daytime venue at the clubhouse with golf course views, open 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Pre-golf breakfasts and smoothies, classic grill fare, shrimp tacos and salads at lunch, plus craft cocktails and beer. Kids 5 and under eat free from the kids menu and kids 6 to 12 receive 50% off.
Cent’Anni Café
Italian for “one hundred years.” The gourmet café serves espresso, light breakfast, organic iced teas, soups, salads, sandwiches, and gelato. When I last stopped in, there was a self-serve mimosa bar that was a fun touch.

The Lobby Lounge
The Lobby Lounge is beautiful. It feels like a big, cozy library in spots, and I really enjoy having a drink or afternoon tea here. There are Venetian glass chandeliers, a Library section with books from Warwick’s, and a wraparound canyon mural by local artist Jim Wodark. Cocktails and small plates are served throughout the day, with live music on weekend evenings. When the pianist is playing, he is pretty great and runs through a lot of recognizable favorites.

Afternoon Tea, Poolside Dining, and In-Room Dining
Weekend afternoon tea is served in the Lobby Lounge with a choice of hot tea or a glass of wine, scones, pastries, finger sandwiches, and a tea sommelier on hand. Poolside dining covers sandwiches, salads, grilled mains, fresh fruit, snacks, ice cream, and a full kids’ menu. In-room dining runs 24 hours with a kids’ menu of its own.
Wellness
The Forbes Five-Star Spa
The spa is Forbes Five-Star, and the space had a major renovation that leans into the canyon setting. I’ve had massages and customized facials here that hold up against the best spas I’ve visited. My daughter and I just spent a spa day here. In fact, it’s one of the only in San Diego where you can easily spend a full day between all of the amenities it offers.

Spa guests have access to wet and dry saunas, indoor whirlpools, and an adults-only Relaxation Pool with food and beverage service. The relaxation lounges are stocked with teas and snacks. Take a look at the framed Hermès scarves in the halls when you walk through. I’m glad they kept these after the renovation.
Dryfloat Hydrotherapy Massage
A standout treatment on the spa menu. The Dryfloat combines a hands-on massage with the weightless feeling of a float tank. You lie on a heated water mattress while the therapist works on you, and the water supports the body so the pressure can go deeper than a regular massage table allows.
The Vibroacoustic Recovery Chair
I tried the vibroacoustic chair on a recent visit and it works. You sit in the chair, low-frequency sound runs through the body, and a guided audio program plays alongside. Settings include Stress, Sleep, Energy, and Focus. The staff says Sleep is roughly equivalent to a full night of rest in 22 minutes. I chose Stress and walked out much more chill than when I sat down.
MediSpa
The spa added a MediSpa menu of advanced aesthetic treatments. Ask the spa team directly for current offerings and to match a treatment to your goals.
Fitness Center and Classes
The 24-hour fitness center has Life Fitness treadmills with personal TVs, exercise bikes, weight machines, an elliptical, and free weights. Indoor and outdoor yoga, meditation, and fitness classes run on a weekly schedule, and a personal trainer is available by appointment.
Swim
Outdoor Swimming Pools
Four heated outdoor pools: three family-friendly pools (with underwater music) and one adults-only Relaxation Pool. Pools are kept at 81°F and the spas at 102°F, so the water is comfortable year-round. The Main Pool has fire pits and a smaller children’s pool alongside.
The adults-only Relaxation Pool sits near the spa, and I liked that my Signature Poolside room opened directly onto the Relaxation Pool deck. Cabanas and daybeds can be reserved through the concierge and come with a dedicated server, water, soft drinks, fruit, and chips and guacamole. It is worth reserving one if you are planning a full day at the pool.

Swim accessories (goggles, sunscreen, sunglasses, arm floats) are available for purchase at the pool. Cabanas can be reserved through the concierge.
Golf
The Tom Fazio Championship Golf Course
The Grand Golf Club is San Diego’s only Tom Fazio-designed 18-hole championship course, routed through the Los Peñasquitos Canyon with lush fairways, dramatic elevation changes, and diverse bunkering. The course is open to members and hotel guests only. Green fees include 18 holes of championship golf, a cart with GPS, a sleeve of TaylorMade TP5x golf balls, a forecaddie, and a bottled water.

The 50,000 sq ft clubhouse includes a golf shop, practice facilities, forecaddies, equipment rental, and door-to-door golf bag shipping. The Grand Golf Performance Academy offers private lessons, club fittings, and weekend clinics.
Junior Golf
Kids ages 12 and under play free when accompanied by an adult. Juniors ages 13 to 17 play for half price. The Grand Golf Academy keeps a set of junior clubs on hand so you don’t have to travel with them.
On Property
Other Activities at Fairmont Grand Del Mar
The 400-acre property has more activities than most San Diego resorts. Hiking and biking, tennis and pickleball, horseback riding, archery, and Saturday morning naturalist-guided hikes through Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve. Yoga and meditation classes run weekly. A complimentary house car is scheduled with the concierge to nearby attractions, on a first come, first served basis. Most of my clients use it to get to the beach.
The Equestrian Center
Trail rides through Los Peñasquitos Canyon, riding lessons, pony rides for younger kids, and a complimentary “Meet the Horses” experience. Riders on trail rides must be at least 7 years old and meet a height minimum. Helmets are provided and required, and closed-toe shoes are required. Reservations needed in advance.
Tip: You can walk down and visit the horses during the day. They’re a short walk from the pool.

Tennis and Pickleball
Two professional tennis courts plus dedicated pickleball play, with private lessons, clinics, and youth day camps. Padel can also be arranged through the concierge.

Archery
The on-property archery range is set up for both adults and family sessions. Instructors guide first-timers through technique. It’s one of the more memorable activities on property, especially for tween and teen kids who’ve never tried it.

Zybra E-Bikes
There is a fleet of Zybra e-bikes parked at the front drive near the valet. You check one out through the Zybra Plus app, which requires riders to be 18 or older, and helmets are provided. The bikes are street legal and capable of about 20 mph, and the ride to Del Mar’s beach is roughly two miles. The e-bikes are not allowed on the golf course or the resort trails.
Hiking
The property sits adjacent to Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve, with more than 37 miles of hiking trails beginning on the resort grounds. Three named routes start on property: the Resort Loop, the Grand View Trail, and the Shaw Trail. The Movement Studio also runs guided 60-minute hike classes, and the concierge can suggest routes based on your fitness level.
Holiday Events
The holiday season is a fantastic time to book a stay. Holiday events at Fairmont Grand Del Mar include glice skating, opportunities to see Santa, s’more roasting, and many more festive activities. Holiday events tend to change slightly every year, so you’ll need to check what’s on offer during your stay.
I went for the Holiday Tea, and the gingerbread scones were my favorite. I also learned that they decorate a live tree, which is rare these days, even at luxury resorts.

For the full lineup each year, see my guide to Fairmont Grand Del Mar holiday events.
For Families
Fairmont Grand Del Mar for Families
This is one of the few true luxury resorts in San Diego that’s actually set up for families. The Explorer’s Club is supervised year-round, kids eat free or half-price at Amaya, junior golf is free for ages 12 and under, and the suite configurations actually work for families of four and five.
The Explorer’s Club (Kids’ Club)
Supervised for ages 5 to 12, year-round. Kids under 5 may participate when accompanied by a parent or caregiver. It’s one of the few year-round supervised kids’ clubs in San Diego.
Activities include painting, coloring, friendship-bracelet making, board games, puzzles, air hockey, and foosball. Half-day, full-day, evening, and hourly options are available. Kids 8 and up can also book archery sessions on property.

The Kids Glamp-In Package
An indoor camping setup added to your room or suite, with a stylish tent, a personalized cookie, a child-sized robe, and a family-friendly movie. The package also includes two complimentary hours at the Explorer’s Club, so you can step away for an adult evening. A nice add-on for a birthday or first-time stay.
Kids’ Pool
The Main Pool complex includes a smaller wading pool for younger kids alongside the larger Main Pool. The Main Pool sits right next door for the older kids.
Junior Golf, Free for Ages 12 and Under
Kids 12 and under play free on the Tom Fazio course with an accompanying adult. Juniors 13 to 17 play for half price. The Grand Golf Academy keeps junior clubs on hand.
Kids Eat Free or Half Price at Amaya
Children 5 and under eat free from the kids’ menu at Amaya when ordering with a registered adult. Children 6 to 12 receive 50% off the regular Amaya menu under the same conditions. Half-price kids’ menu also applies at The Clubhouse Grill.
Pony Rides and Equestrian for Kids
Pony rides are available for the younger kids. Trail rides are open to riders ages 7 and up who meet the height minimum. Day camps run during summer and school holiday weeks.
Family Tennis and Archery
The tennis program runs family lessons designed to get everyone playing at once, plus seasonal youth camps and combined golf-and-tennis camps. The archery range has family sessions as well, and it’s a good fit for tween and teen kids.
Spa Time With Built-In Kids’ Club
Book a treatment at the spa and the resort includes two complimentary hours at the Explorer’s Club for one child. A helpful thing to know when you’re planning the trip or a day visit.
Connecting Rooms and Family Suites
The cleanest family configurations are the Del Mar Suite (two full bathrooms), the Vista Suite (six-person dining table and the easiest fit for a family of five), and the Paseo Suite (eight-person dining table, sleeps up to six). We can help you secure guaranteed connecting rooms booking, subject to availability. See Which Room or Suite to Book for the full breakdown.
Pet-Friendly
Dogs Are Welcome
The resort accepts up to two dogs per room for a $150 pet fee, with no weight limit. Pets are allowed in your room and in outdoor public spaces on a leash, and cannot be left unattended. I strongly advise booking a ground-floor Fireside Patio room so it’s easy to walk directly from your back patio to the grassy areas. Signature Poolside rooms are not pet-friendly.
The Neighborhood
What to Do Near the Resort in Del Mar
Fairmont Grand Del Mar sits in East Del Mar (technically Carmel Valley), at a near-equal drive time between Oceanside and downtown San Diego. Del Mar Village (boutique shopping and dining), Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve and Powerhouse Park are all within 15 to 20 minutes.
Family favorites nearby include Pelly’s Mini Golf and the Free Flight Exotic Bird Sanctuary. For a broader list, see my things to do in Del Mar.
Seasonal events include the San Diego County Fair, one of the top five county fairs in the United States, located at Del Mar Fairgrounds, a quick drive north of the resort on I-5. You can catch this family-fun extravaganza from the first weekend of June through the 4th of July weekend (closed Mondays/Tuesdays). And this is followed quickly by racing season.
The Right Fit
Who Gets the Most Value at Fairmont Grand Del Mar
- Multigenerational families needing up to three-bedroom suite configurations or a villa large enough for the whole party, with a kids’ club that gives adults real breathing room.
- Families with kids of any age who want a luxury resort midway between LEGOLAND and the San Diego Zoo. Often paired with a coastal hotel night before or after for beach time.
- Couples who want an adult-centric stay, especially in a Signature Poolside room facing the adults-only Relaxation Pool. An Addison evening plus a Forbes Five-Star spa day is a quietly elite anniversary or milestone trip.
- Travelers with pets who want a property with lots of lawn, terrace rooms with direct grass access, and a real pet program.
- Holiday travelers looking for the December programming without the crowds of Hotel del Coronado.
- Golfers who want to play San Diego’s only Tom Fazio championship course (members and hotel guests only).
I do not recommend the resort for travelers who prefer sleek, modern accommodations, as this doesn’t align with the resort’s Mediterranean design. It’s not for people who prioritize walkability. Our best resorts, outside of Hotel del Coronado, are usually inland, on golf courses. None of my clients ever complains about walkability here, though, as they like being in a relaxing environment away from city buzz.
Ready to Book Fairmont Grand Del Mar?
First, let’s discuss the best ways to make your reservation at Fairmont Grand Del Mar in San Diego. I strongly suggest booking through me as a Virtuoso or Accor Hera guest.
The most important reasons are my relationship with the hotel (it’s one of my most-booked properties in San Diego) and my ability to personalize your stay. I also send an informative email series, tied to your check-in date, about promotions and events in San Diego.
Booking instructions and VIP amenities are at the top of this post. The same booking flow covers every room category, suite, and villa.
