Your urban getaway is ten minutes (or less) from the airport.

Downtown San Diego is the urban center of the city, a hip neighborhood with something for everyone, whether you're after family fun or nightlife, chic boutiques or contemporary art. The airport is five to ten minutes from most hotels, which is why so many visitors make it their home base.

A Neighborhood of Neighborhoods

The Neighborhoods

Downtown is really several small districts, each with its own character, its own hotels, and its own things to do. Here's how they break down.
The Gaslamp Quarter sign at night in downtown San Diego

01

Gaslamp Quarter

The birthplace of downtown and the epicenter of San Diego nightlife. A popular base for the restaurants, rooftops, and walk-everywhere energy.

Seaport Village on the downtown San Diego marina waterfront

02

Marina District

The bayfront stretch between the Gaslamp and the water, with Seaport Village, the Convention Center, and the big waterfront hotels. A walkable base right on the marina.

Star of India at the Maritime Museum on the Columbia waterfront

03

Columbia

Downtown's tallest towers and much of the waterfront, including the USS Midway and Maritime museums and the harbor cruises that launch from the Embarcadero.

The Little Italy farmers market in San Diego

04

Little Italy

Once home to the city's Italian fishing families, now its go-to district for food, the Saturday farmers market, and design-forward boutiques.

Petco Park ballpark in the East Village of downtown San Diego

05

East Village

Downtown's largest and newest quarter, built around Petco Park. Padres games, breweries, and the striking central library, quieter than the Gaslamp but right next door.

06

Core

The civic and commercial center, home to city government and the Horton Plaza shopping area. Central, but more business than buzz.

Is Downtown Right for Your Trip?

Who Should Stay Downtown

Downtown is for…

  • Travelers who want to walk to dinner, nightlife, and the waterfront without getting in a car.
  • Anyone flying in or out on a tight schedule. The airport is five to ten minutes from most hotels.
  • Padres fans and concertgoers who want to stay near Petco Park and the Gaslamp.
  • Foodies who want Little Italy's restaurants and the Saturday farmers market at their doorstep.

Look elsewhere if…

  • You want a sandy beach outside your door. Pacific Beach or La Jolla for that.
  • You're traveling with young kids who sleep early. The Gaslamp is loud on weekend nights.
  • You want a quiet, residential pace. Downtown is the urban center, not a retreat.
  • You're on a budget in peak summer. Rates climb when conventions and Comic-Con are in town.

Know Before You Go

Travel Tips

01

Skip the Car

You can go carless downtown. The MTS trolley, Old Town Trolley, Amtrak, and rideshare cover most of what you'll want to reach.

02

Closest to the Airport

Most downtown hotels sit five to ten minutes from San Diego International. It's the easiest neighborhood for an early flight or a late arrival.

03

Time It Right

July through October has the best weather. For lower rates, come the shoulder seasons: September after Labor Day into early November, or January through mid-March.

04

Avoid Comic-Con Week

Mid-July, when Comic-Con takes over the convention center, is the hardest time to find a room and the priciest. Plan around it.

05

Know the Enclaves

Downtown is several small neighborhoods: Columbia for the waterfront, the Core for shopping, the Gaslamp for nightlife, Little Italy for food, Cortez Hill for quiet.

06

Stay by Trip Type

Pick your hotel by who's traveling, the season, the atmosphere you want, and your loyalty program. The right base downtown changes with all four.
