General Park Information & History

The history of Dorney Park dates back to 1860 when Solomon Dorney built a trout hatchery and resort on his estate. Ten years later, he converted the estate into a public facility with games, rides, refreshment stands, and picnic groves, plus a restaurant and hotel. He later added a small zoo and gardens.

Ownership passed through several people until 1992, when Cedar Fair bought the park. From the early 1900s until 1963, a large swimming pool was also part of the property, providing the impetus for the waterpark.

Dorney Park’s first water flume ride, Thundercreek Mountain, opened in 1982, but the facility did not have a dedicated waterpark until 1985. Wildwater Kingdom opened that year as a separate attraction, featuring a wave pool, a family water raft ride, body slides, tube slides, and a children’s water play area.

Dorney Park expanded considerably after Cedar Far bought the attraction, adding giant rollercoasters and other adventure rides. Camp Snoopy, with rides for younger children, opened in 2005.

Today, Dorney Park features a combination of rollercoasters, adventure, and family rides, providing fun for everyone in the family. Its most popular rides are Steel Force, Possessed, Hydra the Revenge, Talon Grip of the Fear, Thunderhawk, Laser, Hercules, Dragon Coaster, Woodstock’s Express, and Steel First.

Among the park’s new attractions is Seaside Splashworks, a multi-level structure incorporating 75 play elements, including interactive spray jets, a giant water cannon, a 317-gallon tipping bucket, six water slides, and a toddler splash zone. The beach-themed Seaside Splashworks also has plenty of lounge chairs and shaded areas for mom, dad, grandpa, and grandma.
