The shortlist
If you're going to ask me what my favorite San Diego hotels are, they are here, and you can click to read my full reviews on each of them:
I believe that hotels can make or break a vacation. I trust the ones I'm featuring here based on personal stays and consistent positive client feedback. I have people inside the hotels who take care of guests who book through me behind the scenes.
This is a curated list, not an exhaustive one, and there are many other excellent San Diego hotels where I can also arrange added benefits.
Booked through me
If you choose a hotel in my portfolio, which is clearly marked across my San Diego hotel reviews and lists, you may receive extra benefits at no additional cost, such as daily breakfast for two, room upgrades when available, and hotel credits. Some are bookable directly on my San Diego Virtuoso hotel page. Others, including Four Seasons and select higher-end Hyatts, need to be booked manually to attach amenities, so you'll need to send me your dates.
Neighborhoods
San Diego's top hotels are located in or adjacent to these popular neighborhoods.

Finding your fit
San Diego is as laid back as it is beautiful, but it's also a large, spread-out county. There are amazing San Diego hotels in just about every neighborhood, ranging from luxury to budget-friendly.
Because of its size, where to stay in San Diego can be tricky, and there are usually some trade-offs involved. Ask yourself these questions to narrow down the choices.

No. 01
Do you need to be beachfront? Is walking distance or getting there by car okay? This usually is the #1 driver behind hotel choice, and you should start with my list of San Diego hotels on the beach.
No. 02
If you're visiting friends or attending a conference at the Convention Center, this will decide which part of San Diego to stay in. I have quite a few neighborhood-centric lists that you'll find below.
No. 03
If yes, then Pacific Beach hotels, Little Italy hotels, or Downtown San Diego hotels are best for you.
No. 04
Is it romantic, a staycation, a multi-generational trip, or one full of active sightseeing? This may determine what amenities you need at the hotel (or don't). You may also need to cater to whether you're traveling with kids or pets.
No. 05
We have all of them.
In short
You will have to find a balance as there is no one-size-fits-all San Diego hotel. Through the content I have written on this site, you should be able to find a hotel once you have really thought about your needs. If you're a list person, I have about 30 for you to read.
Pricing
(Aka, why can San Diego hotels be so expensive?)
Understanding what influences price can help you narrow your search. Here are the factors.

No. 01
Time of year, all hotels are more expensive during school holidays, major conventions, and summer.
No. 02
Distance from popular tourist neighborhoods (i.e. Oceanside in the north is less expensive than centrally-located Del Mar or La Jolla).
No. 03
Distance from the beach.
No. 04
Quality of the property and accommodations.
Tip
I think that between Labor Day and mid-October is the best time of year to visit because the weather is usually still sunny and hotel prices are lower.
On the sand

Before selecting a hotel, you must decide how important beach access is. It may surprise you to know that despite our 70 miles of coastline, we actually don't have that many truly beachfront hotels.
Even budget hotels near the beach often cost more than comparable hotels elsewhere, especially during peak season. In San Diego, proximity to the beach is one of the biggest factors influencing hotel prices, so it's worth keeping that in mind when comparing rates.
Timing

We are lucky to have gorgeous weather year-round. There's really no off-season, so occupancy rates in the best hotels in San Diego almost always tend to be high.
Self-serve
We offer two tools if you'd like to research hotels with VIP programs on your own. In both cases, you'll need to understand the occupancy and bedding of the room or suite you're booking. You can find this information on a hotel's website directly. We'll receive your reservation within minutes and will follow up to help make sure everything is correct.
You will need to create a free account and log in to see the most accurate rates.
This tool allows you to see other VIP rates, such as Four Seasons Preferred Partner and Hyatt Prive, in addition to Virtuoso.
With kids

There are so many fantastic things to do in San Diego with kids, so it's no surprise that many families choose it as their vacation destination. I've carved out a niche for helping visitors plan San Diego family vacations because I have a lot of opinions about kid-friendly amenities. I'm a big believer in win-win.
The hard part isn't finding San Diego hotels that welcome kids. It's figuring out which of the best kid-friendly hotels in San Diego is right for your family. You can read more about the decision tree I walk people through in my San Diego family vacation guide.

In their words
We loved the Christmas social area as our granddaughter came to visit. We were very impressed with the resort and the polite accommodating service from the staff. We hope to return!

It was an amazing 50th birthday. The hotel was a spectacular venue due to its location on the beach and lovely newly renovated rooms. I will definitely stay there again. Having the Virtuoso benefits was priceless as we had amazing breakfast included each morning which ensured we started our day off right.

During our stay at Pendry Hotel we were so pleased with all of the perks we received by booking with LaJolla Mom (room view upgrade, $60 breakfast credit, $100 resort credit, wine & chocolate strawberries) we shared your information with several guests and staff members. All were unaware of your service and said they would use it themselves for future visits and recommend you to any visiting friends or family. Thank you!

Just walking around at night with all the holiday lights was awesome! I am SO happy I booked through Katie Dillion! It was so easy, didn't cost any more than booking through the hotel and we had VIP perks, upgrades, and just felt so welcomed! Can't wait to use your booking services again in the future!
